I was on the phone to call centre today and I have met non native speakers who I could understand more, has anyone found this or AIBU.

YABU it's very easy.

Pengggwn · 01/06/2018 19:31

All strong regional accents are hard to understand.

ScreamingValenta · 01/06/2018 19:32

It's not one I have ever struggled to understand. Could it be that the individual you were speaking to didn't have great diction?

tillytoodles1 · 01/06/2018 19:32

Well I'm from Liverpool so I'll say no! I can't understand Glaswegian though.

Fluffyears · 01/06/2018 19:34

Try my accent it’s a nice Scottish one 😆

Any strong accent can be hard for someone who isn’t familiar with it to understand. I’m in NI and have trouble with some NI accents.

Ohlalasayohla · 01/06/2018 19:36

Not sure. I have never had any problem understanding any Brittish accent. I grew up in an area where some people speak with a very strong accent so maybe its helped my ear.
I did notice that once I ventured out into the world it was mostly well educated, well spoken English people who just simply couldn't understand their own country people (but they could speak Russian, German and French). I came to my own conclusions about thatGrin

Hearing aids

Liverpool is picked because the company receives big grants etc to locate there

angryburd · 01/06/2018 19:37

Oh good, another one of these threads.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 01/06/2018 19:38

It’s only hard to understand if you're inclined not to listen
Unfortunately some folk have a bbc or home counties preference and don’t like regional accents

caoraich · 01/06/2018 19:38

I'm Glaswegian and have never struggled with strong Liverpudlian.

Sometimes different dialect can be difficult, but generally once I've picked up what the words mean it's OK.

SingingSands · 01/06/2018 19:39

I struggle with Liverpudlian, but love listening to it, there’s something about the cadence of it. I’m Glaswegian but you can’t tell, I’ve been away nearly 20 years, sometimes I struggle to understand my brothers!

I’m not great with accents though, and it always helps to see a person talk, rather than just hear them I think.

I do love how Britain has so many regional accents on such a small island though, it’s fascinating!

Glumglowworm · 01/06/2018 19:40

YABU to single out Liverpudlian accents in particular

Tbh any very strong accent can be hard to understand. I personally struggle with Belfast and Orkney/Shetland the most (I work in a call centre).

lamerde · 01/06/2018 19:40

Glaswegian here.

Only time I’ve ever struggled to understand a Liverpudlian was when he was very drunk and slurring.

SakuraBlossom · 01/06/2018 19:57

I have a friend who used to be married to someone really posh. She was so far back (if that is the right term) that I couldn't understand her. I used to get really stressed out listening to her as I couldn't follow what she was saying. It was like a comedy with some crazy posh accent put on. One day she said something and then stopped in silence. It must have been a Q. I said, I'm really sorry but I cannot understand what you are saying.

As a Scouser I would say YABU and just started this thread to take cheap shots at us Scousers when you wouldn't have the guts to do it to us in person Grin

MeanTangerine · 01/06/2018 20:07

I have a strong Geordie accent. I personally find Scouse/north west accents pretty difficult sometimes, more than southern or Scottish. I think the rhythm and emphasis of the sentences are really different, with more difference as you go west - east in the country than as you go north - south.

Or maybe I just spend more time hearing Southern /Scottish than I do hearing Scouse. I guess unfamiliar accents are always going to be trickier than familiar ones, so it just depends what you're used to.

OakIsBetterTho · 01/06/2018 20:24

I do agree, but that's strong accents generally I think.
I turned down a date with a truly lovely man when I was about 17 because I simply couldn't understand him most of the time. He was Liverpudlian.

Pebbles16 · 01/06/2018 20:43

Divided by a common language. Have found it hard to understand some accents on the phone. I am a great believer in "I think there's a bad connection"!

Birdsgottafly · 01/06/2018 20:47

Just ask them to slow down. it's the speed that can make a Scouse, or other accents difficult.

Brendatheblender · 01/06/2018 20:47

I don’t find a strong Liverpudlian accent hard to understand or any other to be honest.

Apart from Glaswegian. I used to spend summer holidays at my Uncles house in Glasgow and probably only understood 30% of what he was saying, I just nodded a lot.

TidyDancer · 01/06/2018 20:53

I struggle with some very strong Scottish accents but haven't had any trouble with Liverpudlian ones.

HolyMountain · 01/06/2018 21:07

A strong Liverpudlian accent is easy to understand, I’ve spoken to plenty understand what they’re saying ; no problem.

Is it you OP?

gillybeanz · 01/06/2018 21:15

YABU a broad Cornish accent or Geordie can be hard to understand, but Scouse is easy.
Although, I do think that colloquialisms can be hard to understand in any language if the person isn't familiar with the words or accents.

Calm down, calm down.
