Internal recruitment - discrimination

I work for a company and they have recently hired a new manager who has made it clear she doesn't like me. I am the only female in my team, and upon being hired, she told me about her tactics for flirting with boys to get her own way so I assumed it was down to sex that she doesn't like me. A team leader has left the company, and she told me today that she is thinking of promoting a co-worker to the role. I have the same experience as my co-worker and there is not a lot of difference in your positions. I have a family and work from home one day a week. Am I within my rights to feel miffed, that it should be at least internally advertised? Admittedly, I probably am not as confident as my colleague...but should I not be given the opportunity to even apply? Would an employment lawyer laugh me out of the office?

Contact ACAS tomorrow and join a union, you could be in for a rough ride.

There's no law that says it has to be advertised although often a company will advertise so that it looks good. Then they appoint the person they always wanted, thus wasting everyone's time. Discrimination is difficult to prove. If your co worker is male and has less experience and qualifications, you could have the basis of a case, but usually the company will be able to offer good reasons for their decision.

Happens all the time in the NHS

It's a big company and they usually look to do the right thing.

The co- worker is male and we have the same experience and qualifications. (Male dominated industry).

I get that she seems to want to promote him but seems like they should at least pretend to go down the route of advertising the job internally etc. especially given that I have been at the company twice as long as colleague.

To be fair, she's a bully and j don't want to work for her and am actively looking for a job. I plan to just leave, it's only that colleagurs mentioned the unfairness of not advertising the job etc.
