To think second hand baby clothes markets are a scam?

Pollaidh · 31/05/2018 21:02

I had a load of nice baby and child clothes, equipment etc, all sorted to be excellent condition, good brands like Jojo, White Company etc. I paid for a table at a local children's second hand sale, for what was supposed to be a well-attended market. Only a handful of people came. We made less than £5. Clothes were fairly priced (checked other stalls, and other sites where these things are discussed). The organiser said it was very unusual to have so few people, we were unlucky etc, and to try again because normally people are stripping the tables bare.

We did, reduced the prices further, and this time made £3 profit once the table was paid for. Again very very few people came. Most people there went home with tons of stuff.

I've given up now and am giving it all away (I'd already given a lot away but don't know that many people with DC the right age).

Does anyone have a good experience with these places, or is it always bad like this?

I think you have to pick which one to go to. I did one and it was really busy, it's one of the harder ones to get a table at. Good because there are a lot of buyers but there also a lot of sellers. I missed just over £200 selling toys and few equipment pieces but didn't take any clothes. I find the clothes stalls at these places a bit of a jumble. I think gumtree/eBay can be better for clothes, especially if you bundle them but the markets are good for toys etc

Maid, not missed

Grr......made (really wish you could edit posts)

greendale17 · 31/05/2018 21:09

The second hand markets organised by the NCT that I have attended have been quite busy

londonrach · 31/05/2018 21:24

Nct and facebook the way to go as sold everything that way. Do you do the mums to mums market.

WindyWednesday · 31/05/2018 21:26

NCT sales are the best to go for.

wowbutter · 31/05/2018 21:28

I wouldn't pay much for second hand baby's stuff, even branded.
It just gets pooed on.
I'm looking at six baby grows for two quid type prices...

PicaK · 31/05/2018 21:29

NCT every time.

ArfArfBarf · 31/05/2018 21:31

Nct sales can be packed but people are looking for bargains (think 50p-£2 an item of clothing). I’d sell the brands you’re talking about online.

happinessiseggshaped · 31/05/2018 21:31

Good brands you should sell on Ebay for top prices, everything else if you are desperate to clear put in an NCT sale for individual items, or sell a bundle of nursery quality clothes on Facebook sites. I sold loads of stuff through an NCT sale, good to have a clear out but made a lot less than I would have done selling elsewhere, but even some quite odd things sold.

But no you dont get a lot for second hand clothes, particularly for boys. Toys and equipment sell better.

Pollaidh · 31/05/2018 21:32

It's the Pickles market.

NCT previously stopped doing sales, courses etc around here for a while. Last time I checked there was nothing coming up.

Prices were £1-£2 for a good as new Little White Co jumper or trousers for a toddler or pre-schooler, so not excessive. The next table was selling bundled babygros etc for £2 and she didn't sell much either.

I've been to an nct nearly new sale and it was packed. The clothes were also far from cheap (perhaps representative of the area where it was held).

Personally I can't be bothered with the hassle of selling second baby clothes, but if I were to, I would use a local Facebook selling site. At least that way the buyer collects (so no faffing with postage or them being unhappy with a delivery), and no expense on your part, and minimal time input.

dingdongdigeridoo · 31/05/2018 21:34

The ones run by cheeki monkey or other random companies are a bit shit. A few of the MLM huns on my Facebook run them now. They’re franchises where the organiser just wants to sell tables.

xyzandabc · 31/05/2018 21:34

As above, NCT sales or Facebook selling sites. I made £70 from the last NCT sale I did that's after the £5 registration fee and comission. Usually make at least £40.
Facebook is also good esp for more big brand immaculate items.

Raver84 · 31/05/2018 21:35

I tried one of these baby sales and one person turned up. It was such a hassle now I sell at boot fair with all my other junk once a year 50p an item or 3 for 1 pound. Always sells.

camelfinger · 31/05/2018 21:37

I’m surprised there are so many markets on for second hand baby clothes. I got given a few bags for free, as well as gifts when I had a newborn. As mine were summer born, I just did a lot of washing rather than buying loads of clothes to clutter the place up with, that they grow out of so quickly. I’d probably rather buy a new pack of brightly coloured sleepsuits from Sainsbury’s than root around a second hand clothes market, but I’m not that interested in clothes so maybe not the best person to advise.

mummmy2017 · 31/05/2018 21:37

Funny they are run by us and everyone complains no buyers. The people who run them make money on tables

Pollaidh · 31/05/2018 21:38

dingdong yes that's what I was starting to wonder. It's some local franchise, all marketing of tables, but not of the actual event. Complete waste of time and effort.

I'll try eBay and FB for the few remaining things I have.

I did a little pickles market and made about £27 I didn't sell one single item of clothing, even though my table was full of it! I sold toys, a pair of sandals and lots of children's DVDs.

PurplePotatoes · 31/05/2018 21:45

I sell on eBay which can be a pain but personally I prefer that to using FB and waiting for someone turning up at my door. I usually make £30-70 on a large bundle e.g. all their wardrobe in a certain size.

TeachesOfPeaches · 31/05/2018 21:47

Why don't you donate to a local refuge for victims of domestic abuse who have had to flee their homes with nothing?

Nowgimmeagin · 31/05/2018 21:55

I did one sale with a certain company and made next to nothing, however I have done two others (mum2market) and made a very decent profit.
Think a lot depends on the franchisee who is running it and their own marketing of the event

Pollaidh · 31/05/2018 21:56

Teaches I went down to the shelter before Christmas with a big box of brand new toys as well as make up etc for the mothers, mainly presents that were duplicates etc. I was under the impression that second hand clothes weren't accepted.

hidinginthenightgarden · 31/05/2018 21:59

Clothes never sell well at childrens markets. I have done 2. Made around £70 profit each time. Sold very few clothes items.

Pollaidh · 31/05/2018 22:00

Also had some really nice toys and equipment, and none of that sold either. Wasn't just clothing. Puky trike in nearly new condition, for example.
