Work suddenly changing my hours

IStillMissBlockbuster · 31/05/2018 18:38

Is this fair? When I accepted the job offer, I checked with the line manager that I could work very very marginally adjusted hours to make my commute tolerable. 6 months in and they've gone back on their word saying that the only acceptable reasons for flexible working are childcare and caring for dependents.

Did you get the change in writing? In your contract?

Aw12345 · 31/05/2018 18:43

YANBU. They are being U. I've just had a similar thing... Work asked me to start 30 mins early then finish 30 mins early. I agreed. Now in the rota I'm down to finish at my old (later) time despite being in early everyday! Grr.

Some companies are so U. Does it benefit the business for you to be in at the hours they suggested?

Mummyrowland · 31/05/2018 18:45

EVeryobe has The right to request flexible working hours whether you have kids or not. They need to be reviewed and considered

Happygolucky009 · 31/05/2018 18:48

No idea, but what have you been working and what just they want you do?

Both myself and dh have flexible working but I know my employers wouldn't want me to do dh hours as it wouldn't suit their business, whereas it works brilliantly for dh who is able to take advantage of time differences around the world.

Everyone has the right to request flexible working, but in reality it's easy for an employer to refuse it.

OP given your short employment there is little you can do about this as you have no recourse to a tribunal. Can you present a business plan as to how your hours could benefit the employer?

This is true, but any employer can say "no" under the guise of it not being good for the business. I could go to work tomorrow and ask for flexible working but I know I'd be told "no, that doesn't work for retail, so you'll have to stay as you are or leave".

Rainboho · 31/05/2018 18:57

Have the adjusted hours been working for the employer or have there been issues?

Do you have the adjustment in writing?

What does your contract say?

IStillMissBlockbuster · 31/05/2018 19:21

I have nothing in writing. I signed a standard contract. My working day is adjusted by half an hour. There have been no issues, my role is such that I don't do any take which require me to be in at times outside those hours. It doesn't really affect the business at all. They just said it was to make sure they are being fair to everyone.

So I guess i'm screwed but I really think they've been underhanded and downright bastardly.

Speak to your HR department for advice

Justanotherlurker · 31/05/2018 22:53

Are you asking for reduced hours or just moving your shift?

As others have said everyone has the right to ask for flexible working, but the company is under no obligation to grant it.

IStillMissBlockbuster · 01/06/2018 06:18

Just moving my day earlier by 30 minutes.
