DF bought DS a quad bike ...

...and I have very mixed feelings.

They picked it up on one of those selling sites (gumtree or other) neither DF or DM talked to me before buying it and I just got a whatsapp with a picture of it saying its for both my DSs to ride when they're bigger.

AIBU to feel a bit shocked and feel it's unsafe?

It's an electrically charged one and looks big.

DS1 is 3 and DS2 is barely 6mo so not like they can get on it anytime soon unless my DF attempts to ride on it with DS1 when we visit.

I really don't know if I'm comfortable with this probably partly due to hearing a lot of details about a recent horrible quad bike/car accident and I'd really like to ask for impartial opinions about quad bikes and if/when you would let your DCs near them?

I would be super uncomfortable with it too, they're so dangerous!

AllMYSmellySocks · 30/05/2018 20:44

Especially since your DC are so young - surely they should be charging about on bikes and scooters not powered vehicles!

Knittedfairies · 30/05/2018 20:44

My children would have to be a hell of a lot bigger before I let them anywhere near a quad bike! What were they thinking?

TheyCanGoInTheBucket · 30/05/2018 20:45

Bloody hell, are they insane? Do they have aspirations of DGC growing up to have an ASBO?

Disclaimer: I live in a very rough area where quad bikes blight our neighbourhood. I can see that there is a possibility some people may use them properly, on a farm or such like

Is it like a kiddy electric quad bike to ride around the patio on with a top speed of about 5mph like you’d buy from Argos? Some of those are quite sizeable and take up to a small adult woman amount of weight but I think are generally suitable from about 3 years and up. That I wouldn’t have a problem with.

If it’s a full on ride on the road, chav tearing around the local estate chased by the polic quad bike then that’s a totally different story.

Our kids have used quad bikes from a young age. The both now use a 400cc and a 650cc. They are safe, electric ones more so as you can’t get up a decent speed.

They are fun. Our longest ride was 220 miles into complete wilderness.

US law states they must ware a helmet until 16.

As to not drip feed and answer PP I don't know how fast it goes but I know it's not a proper "proper" one as from what I can tell the tyres look plastic.

However it is big and upon messaging back saying "wow it looks big" DM replied "yes it's even bigger in real life".

It's definitely bigger than that @TroubledLichen

In that case YANBU! Anything bigger than that is not suitable for a toddler.

Loopytiles · 30/05/2018 22:49

I would tell them they’d wasted their money because no way would the DC ever be riding them!
