I need some advice please.

My sister is joining Slimming world, after 3 kids her weights risen to 21st and she’s at serious risk of diabetes and other serious conditions related to her weight. She’s got a food disorder, she’s comfort Ate since teens, we had a tuff childhood and she took the brunt of it. Every emotion she feels she wants to eat, it’s a vicious circle. I want to support her the best I can however she’s said she’s giving up smoking too. As an ex smoker myself I know how difficult giving up smoking can be and I don’t want her putting too much stress on herself. WIBU to tell her to get in the “diet zone” first then quit smoking?

I've done it! I gave up on 10th jan, I'm using a vape and doing slimming world. I struggled with food for about 3 months but using SlimmingWorld stopped me gaining any more and the last 6 weeks I've really got focused and lost 15lb . To be fair though I changed groups as the first one didn't really suit me as they were a bit clicky. It's better to watch your diet at the same time otherwise you see yourself getting fatter and hit back on the fags (been there done that)
But good luck to your sis x

I did both at the same time by taking up exercise.

Honestly there's no reason why she can't, but tell her to make it positive and TAKE up exercise rather than just thinking about everything she's GIVING up.

I think YABU, you can absolutely lose weight and stop smoking at the same time if you want to. It sounds like shes ready and determined to turn her life around which is great, if shes got the motivation to start to do both now then let her and support her not discourage her.

You definitely can but I found it hard work and eventually succumbed to the cigarettes when I was bored, instead of needlessly snacking I would smoke! Not healthy

You have no idea how hard/easy she will find it. I smoked 20 a day for 10 years and just stopped one day - that was 13 years ago. Didn’t find it that hard at all. Had the odd cig at various points in the first few years but have never started smoking regularly again and never want to.

I do, however, have an eating disorder which sounds much like your sister’s and I’ve beeb fighting a battle with my weight for 25 years - much harder to deal with than the smoking.

If she is finding it difficult to do both there is always vaping. Doesn’t have to be one of those big tank things that produce loads of clouds, just a slim one that you inhale as you would a cigarette
