To ask if you’ve ever had a “near death” experience?

When I was 18 I almost amputated my arm on a bathroom sink - I slipped on a wet floor, landed on the sink which was cracked and broke in half, and I cut my arm down to the bone almost 3/4 of the way around. I lost consciousness quite quickly and lost a terrifying amount of blood - my mum found me in a giant pool of blood and had she not found me then I would have died - but I never experienced anything like the reports of near death experiences. Maybe because I lost consciousness so quickly. Losing consciousness was a bit like going into a tunnel I suppose as my vision gradually reduced to a point and then I was out, but I understand why that would happen.

Just wondering if anyone has experienced this, and what happened? I’m very curious about the scientific reasons for common experiences in this situation. I’ve never spoken to anyone who’s actually experienced it.

My mum passed away three years ago today and for her final 24 hours she was unable to speak and sometimes I wonder what those final hours were like for her - she did seem very peaceful. I’m not at all religious so no comfort to be had there!

I 'died' several times and have twice been on life support in a coma. I went to sleep and woke up. No tunnel, no life flashing before my eyes, simply nothing and no conscious passing of time.

lamerde · 30/05/2018 17:17

OP I actually got that funny feeling in my legs reading about your accident 😯

How are you now?

Never had a near death experience but I’m pretty sure they do exist

BabiesDontNeedDaddies · 30/05/2018 17:21

Someone tried to murder me once. Just like taking a nap that's all

SinkGirl · 30/05/2018 17:25

Sorry lamerde - it isn’t a very nice story! I was extremely lucky, they saved my arm and I’m just left with some nerve damage and a massive scar (it goes round the back too). Could have been much worse!

Following.

Horse riding accident which ended with (very large!) horse standing on my chest. Broken ribs, shoulders and sternum, 2 punctured lungs, torn liver and spleen.

It felt the same as when I faint - static-y white noise, with my vision pixelating out.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 30/05/2018 17:33

I had a 'known' serial rapist/murderer grab me and try to drag me into his car when I was 14, even today if it enters my mind out of nowhere my blood runs cold at how close I came. Luckily that man is no longer alive.

I also got sepsis and became very unwell, very quickly, luckily someone I knew carried me to the local hospital.

Swine flu nearly got me too, I passed out in the snow, my bastard ex wouldn't come home to let me in after delirium made me forget my keys, luckily my mum was popping in to fetch something.

I make sure I really value everyday now.

Chillyegg · 30/05/2018 17:34

Er yes but I don’t remember it. When I was little we lived in turkey and there was an earthquake and it was really bad. Everyone told my mum to leave me in the building. Anyway my mum went back for me and the minute my mum lifted me out of the cot a plate fell down and fell where I was lying. She got out the building and then it crumbled down

fessmess · 30/05/2018 17:36

I nearly died and my life flashed before me. I saw what I did before the fateful horse ride, day before, week, year etc until I was able experiencing my earliest memories. All in 20 secs. As the restriction of my airway ceased the "film" stopped.

Bearfrills · 30/05/2018 17:41

Sepsis here too. At the point where I was very unwell and waiting to see if the antibiotics would or wouldn't work I was in and out of consciousness and I knew I was dying. It wasn't scary, I was very calm about it and although I was sad to be leaving DH and the DC I knew I'd had a good life and that they'd all be okay after I was gone. I was also very cold, shivering, and I remember thinking well at least I won't be cold anymore! I had some lovely conversations with lots of loved ones who weren't actually there, both in my head and out loud (not ghosts, I was hallucinating) before drifting off to sleep again. That was the overwhelming feeling, drifting pleasantly off to sleep and I was so very exhausted that the drifting was beautifully peaceful.

MeMyShelfandIkea · 30/05/2018 17:44

I remember there was a tv programme on about this some time ago investigating the near death tunnel thing/people seeing relatives etc (really sorry I have no idea what the programme was called).

As I recall the effect was something scientific to do with the brain, they mimicked this by testing fighter pilots in a machine that exposed them to massive G forces which brought about similar experiences to those associated with near death experiences. Maybe someone else will recognise what I'm talking about?!

MorningsEleven · 30/05/2018 17:44

Assaulted by a bloke with a gun. That was frightening as fuck. Totally flipped my life. It's like one half was carefree and I felt teflon-coated then it all changed completely. I've never felt safe since.

SluttyButty · 30/05/2018 17:44

I have been technically dead, in a coma on life support. Like the above poster, I passed out from blood loss and woke up with them extubating me. No tunnel, no white light and no angels. And my life definitely did not flash before me.

However whilst bleeding out I could feel my life ebbing and flowing from me.

The anaesthetist did come and see me after and told me I had died on the table and he never expected me to live.

Littletreefrog · 30/05/2018 17:48

I nearly drowned. I remember very vividly the moment I gave up and accepted I was going to die it was actually a remarkably clear and concious decision.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 30/05/2018 17:52

I got the feeling of impending doom before I got really unwell with sepsis and also remember feeling so
peaceful slipping off to sleep before waking up in hospital.

SparklyMagpie · 30/05/2018 18:05

All of your comments Flowers I'm very fortunate not to have a story, but it's something that fascinates me seeing differing experiences. I can lay awake for hours at night trying to imagine what happens when it's time

SinkGirl · 30/05/2018 18:08

I’m so sorry so many of you have had such awful experiences. The stories of feeling peaceful are certainly reassuring as I reminisce about my Mum - she did seem very peaceful but I wasn’t sure if that was just appearances. Flowers to you all

I remember having all these doctors around me working on me, and losing consciousness and thinking, this is what dying feels like and being accepting of it. Feeling relaxed even.
I heard the doctor saying stay with us and I suddenly thought of my husband and kids. I used all my energy to fight staying conscious then.

NotASingleFuckToGive · 30/05/2018 18:16

I 'died' from an anaphylactic shock when I was 17, it was an unknown allergy so I didn't know what was happening at the time. My throat closed shut and I felt very, very aware of what was happening, that I couldn't breathe, but was calm and tingling on my skin, maybe adrenaline or whatever chemical the body gives out when you're starved of oxygen.
I don't remember the ambulance or anything else until I came round in hospital unable to see, my eyes had fused shut and my body was covered in welts.
But in a strange way it's made me less scared of dying, as I remember not panicking, just feeling very confused why lmy chest was vibrating. If that is what the true death process feels like, then I can cope with that when I'm about 130 please Smile

expatinscotland · 30/05/2018 18:17

I nearly drowned in a pool when I was about 4. I didn't fight it and it was one of the most peaceful feelings in the world. I still dream it every now and again. Out of the corner of my left eye I can remember seeing the lifeguard dive in. I'd gone in with another little boy. Thankfully we were both okay.

kaytee87 · 30/05/2018 18:18

I haven't but in my grandfathers final hours a few weeks ago he mumbled 'only a few more yards to go' 💙

SinkGirl · 30/05/2018 18:18

I had an anaphylactic reaction to an IV drug once - it was put in, I was left to it and the next thing I knew they brought me round with drugs. I honestly don’t remember anything at all.

SinkGirl · 30/05/2018 18:19

kaytee that’s beautiful, I am admittedly very emotional today but that really got me!

@SinkGirl I'm crying now too!

LegallyBrunet · 30/05/2018 18:20

I had an absence seizure in the middle of the road and if my friend hadn’t realised and pulled me out of the way I’d have been hit by a van. I remember coming out of the seizure and wondering why my friend looked terrified.
