To want to move to a better climate?

NewDOOFUSfor18 · 30/05/2018 13:58

This is kind of light hearted as I'm just venting and feeling really disheartened but I am so fucking sick of British weather and really feel like a move down under or California or somewhere, anywhere that it doesn't rain so fucking much!!

I am supposed to be having a bbq this evening and, up until last evening, the weather looked ok...a bit overcast but dry. I never host anything so I've gone all out, I had to buy garden furniture and an actual bbq (I guess that was kind of important 😂) and I've got loads of food and IT HASN'T STOPPED RAINING 😭😭😭

AIBU to want just one part of the year where it doesn't rain? AIBU to want to emigrate to Dubai or Australia?

Sounds like my idea of hell! Somewhere really cold (not rainy) however... Smile

Carboholic · 30/05/2018 14:03

I am so with you.

However, Australia has spiders and Dubai has issues with women, while in the UK I have a job so...

Can you book a holiday or, barring that, ogle some holiday websites?

KirstenRaymonde · 30/05/2018 14:05

You’d be mad to move to Dubai.

Food is very expensive in Australia.

California has guns.

I quite like the mad British weather so I’m possibly the wrong person to ask!

CarefullyDrawnMap · 30/05/2018 14:05

Yeah, I kind of agree. I'd like it to be about 71 degrees with low-humidity for around 8 months of the year, then in December have nice powdery attractive snow, and one month of charming, lamby spring with blossom in April and maybe two months of golden autumn and all that jazz in Oct/Nov. I don't know of anywhere that does this.

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 30/05/2018 14:07

Oh no, Dubai isn't a lovely place to live at all. We went a few years back with DH while he was working out there and not a single day went by where I wasn't made to feel uncomfortable for being a 'lone' woman with two children.

Move to a little Greek island. I want to. But what I want most is to move in with the Durrells and live their mad life.

specialsubject · 30/05/2018 14:08

ah yes, Australia with the water shortage in the south and the horrible tropical climate in the north.

Dubai with a climate so disgusting that it is unbearable for part of the summer. like most desert places.

temperate is good.

thatsscottishtender · 30/05/2018 14:08

Australia is beautiful and there really aren't that many spiders. I see a house spider now and then but no big beasties.

thatsscottishtender · 30/05/2018 14:10

@specialsubject horrible tropical climate? 😂
I holiday in the North every year. It's paradise.

ShellsBells76 · 30/05/2018 14:13

I agree, I would be happy with a constant low 20s temp, although I do love hot weather, we have booked a chic gorgeous little beach hut for tomorrow for DDs 13th birthday and have just cancelled as they now forecast terrible storms all day, she's upstairs sulking and I'm frantically Googling indoor things to do Confused
We seem to just get a few days of boiling humid weather then back to rain!

Branleuse · 30/05/2018 14:27

id love to live in tenerife. Doesnt tend to go below 20 in the winter and rarely above 30 in the summer

hennybeans · 30/05/2018 15:34

I grew up in California and it does have nice weather, but there are trade offs: astronomical housing cost most places, earthquakes, fires, so much traffic, terrible public schools unless you live somewhere super wealthy, no seasons, actually very hot weather in summer. The grass isn't always greener ( literally because 8 months of the year the whole state is brown due to lack of water and hot climate!).

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 30/05/2018 16:04

I would love love LOVE to live somewhere like Tenerife. Not so bothered about it being hot, but 20 degrees most of the year would make my heart sing with joy.

It's been fab weather where I am the past two weeks or so (Cumbria) with hardly a drop of rain and warm dry weather. I have felt so happy with life. The weather really has an impact on my mood and I am already worrying about winter.

Myotherusernameisbest · 30/05/2018 16:05

I'm with you OP, lets pack up and move down under! I feel so much happier when the sun is shining and the UK weather is so unpredictable.

I'll put up with the spiders and snakes for a decent evening, sat on the patio on nice new garden furniture, cooking on the new barbie in the SUN!

When are we leaving? Grin

Sarahlou63 · 30/05/2018 16:06

Portugal is pretty damned wonderful. We have short, mild winters, hot summers, cheap wine and big ocean on our doorstep (grin)

midnightmisssuki · 30/05/2018 16:08

Singapore. Wink

Storm4star · 30/05/2018 16:08

I would hate all year round sunshine, my idea of hell! I like the variation we get here. I get your frustration about the BBQ though!

Tumilnaughts · 30/05/2018 16:13

Grew up in California and I'm so glad I moved away. The heat in Southern California is oppressive. Live anywhere else in the state and the weather is similar to here (lived in uk for 6 years). Maybe I just don't like the heat though?

Graphista · 30/05/2018 16:21

I'm in west Scotland we usually get maybe a one day summer! 😂

In the winter(/Autumn/Spring/either end of summer 😂) when it's dreich and miserable yea I dream of warmer climes - then I'm the FIRST to complain as soon as it hits 20c (68f for the non Brits).

I have typically celtic colouring so burn if I I so much as look at the sun, get headaches in the run up to humidity storms, and have a far from "bikini ready" body!

Is there anywhere that's mostly dry and rarely gets above 21/22*c?

Portugal sounds promising.

I have American friends who retired from a state with similar climate to ours and moved to a hot weather state - they hate it! But can't afford to move back.

NewDOOFUSfor18 · 30/05/2018 22:26

Right Portugal it is Grin otheruser I'll pick you up at the weekend.

I went ahead with the bbq, gazebos are amazing things, and the rain stopped so wasn't too bad but I would really like to be able to guarantee a summer that is mainly dry but not too hot.

I realise I'm a miserable and slightly tipsy twat and should be grateful for what I have.

NewDOOFUSfor18 · 30/05/2018 22:28

I'm really disappointed that California isn't as dreamy as I envisaged. I got the impression that Dubai wasn't particularly friendly towards women but thought that may be exaggerated somewhat.

Treaclepie19 · 30/05/2018 22:31

Very unreasonable!
But I hate the hot weather Grin

boomboom12 · 30/05/2018 22:35

I love California weather, it was just so easy for dressing & although warm it wasn’t sweaty. Although I’ve only ever been in Sept & Oct.

Growingboys · 30/05/2018 22:36

I love our climate. The heat in eg Australia or Spain in the summer is oppressive, and after a week or so I'm desperate to get away. Sweating under my boobs - ugh!

My ideal is living in Britain but having two holidays a year - skiing in the sun in Spring and somewhere hot like Italy in the summer.

beingsunny · 30/05/2018 22:38

Not unreasonable, it's the first day of winter tomorrow, I sat out and had a BBQ last night Grin

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 30/05/2018 22:40

I lived in Dubai a few years ago. It honestly got a bit boring opening the curtains in the morning and thinking ‘huh, sunny, again’ Grin
I’ve also lived in the Philippines (though there’s a bit of a variation in rainy season) and Singapore, and I genuinely missed Seasons. It was one of the biggest things to look forward to coming back to.
