To be annoyed with the National Trust?

Last month we signed up for a family membership with the national trust at one of those stands that you sometimes see at various events. The national trust man sold the deal to us as being £100 for annual membership, paid in 10 x £10 monthly direct debits.

On checking my online banking this morning, I notice that they've taken the whole £100 in one go so I called them up to be told I'd actually been signed up for £100 automatic renewal annual membership. (On checking the paperwork, I realise that stupidly I had taken the man on his word and not noticed that he had actually ticked the wrong box - stupid me, I know!! Angry)

I can have my £100 back in 28 days if I cancel the membership now and start a new membership on monthly DD. Other than that, nothing can be done, lady on the phone was very sorry....

I'm really annoyed! At £10 per month, it was a luxury we could afford and money we wouldn't miss. This £100 payment was not expected and is now going to leave us short of money this month. There's no point in cancelling it as by the time we get the money back, we'll have been paid again and have already have cut the corners we're going to have to cut in order to compensate for being £100 short this month, iyswim? AIBU to be really annoyed about this? I don't understand why when they can take money off us so quickly, it takes 28 days to be returned!!

If the money has been taken by direct debit you could just call your bank and claim an indemnity - and they will refund you.

Claim indemnity they’ve taken an unauthorised amount and acknowledged that they have.

Also came to say contact the bank. IME it’s refunded within a few days

Even though I have signed the form, having not noticed he has ticked the wrong box? Surely it's my fault for not reading the paperwork properly?

Thank you for the advice!

I don't believe a bank will refund a direct debit if you signed it saying they could take the full £100 annually. They would only refund if there had been a mistake on the paperwork and I don't believe they'll go by what was said. Worth a try though.

The bank will refund the DD, just tell them the NT have taken the wrong amount.

My dad would call them thieving bastards! We had some good times with our National Trust Memberships , and have paid a pretty sum over the years. I did always feel, though, that the money from my family membership wasn't enough for them . . .
