Cadbury Dairy Milk Daim Chocolate Bar not suitable for vegetarians

Cadbury Dairy Milk Daim Chocolate Bar says it is not suitable for vegetarians. WHY? The ingredients don't have any obviously non veg stuff in.

Link to Tesco and ingredients list

It’ll be the whey. It’s a by product of the cheese making industry and therefore will probably have come into contact with rennet.

MikeUniformMike · 29/05/2018 19:41

E476, probably. Maybe the whey.

Plantlover · 29/05/2018 19:46

I think it's rennet.

Such a shame as I love the Cadbury diam eggs!

PestymcPestFace · 29/05/2018 19:47

E476 is made from polyglycerol and castor oil.

Probably is the whey, but why? This is 2018, most whey is made without rennet now.

Otherwise flavourings have to be suspect.

How much other chocolate is not vegetarian?

It is the whey. Some cheeses are still made using rennet (calf stomach) and whey is a by-product, after the cheese has been made.

MarklahMarklah · 29/05/2018 19:55

It might be worth contact Cadbury directly and asking them? Sometimes the labelling is out of date with the ingredients in as much as it may be that they used to use whey and now they don't, or they use different whey. It is to do with the dime/daim bar though - I haven't eaten them in years.

QuantumPixies · 29/05/2018 19:57

E442 could be from an animal fat source.

PestymcPestFace · 29/05/2018 20:00

Interesting Daim bar ice cream and the daim mikado sticks are suitable for vegetarians. They must have several factories making daim to different standards.

Can find no info of just straight up daim bars. No claims of vegetarian or not are forthcoming.

The global supply of guaranteed vegetarian whey is surprisingly low

PestymcPestFace · 29/05/2018 20:09

I see a good business opportunity Albus

I'm a vegetarian who regularly eats this Confused it doesn't say 'not suitable for vegetarians' on the packet (got one in the fridge!) and doesn't say it on Ocado's website or Amazon's either. Hopefully this is just Tesco being overzealous?

lecossaise · 29/05/2018 20:15

Are you sure it's castor oil and not castoreum?!

lecossaise · 29/05/2018 20:17

(but really it is rennet, Cadbury have already answered this if you Google.)

PestymcPestFace · 29/05/2018 20:17

Dino The packets in Morrison's have it printed on them Sad

I found a tweet from Cadbury about it:

@LouLou699 Hi there, calf rennet is used in the making of the caramel in the Daim pieces. Hope that helps!

On Cadbury website it also says not suitable for vegetarians

DinoGreen · 29/05/2018 20:21

Oh no 🤢

PestymcPestFace · 29/05/2018 20:27

So why are some Daim products marked as veggie?

Is there more than one Daim factory?

It is the discrepancy that is getting to me. I don't even eat Cadbury chocolate.

PestymcPestFace · 29/05/2018 20:27

Check your bar Dino just under the ingredient list.

You're right Pesty, bleugh. I don't get it either, I'm sure the mini Daims are ok?

I hate it when things aren't suitable for vegetarians when they have no good reason to be! Chocolate with nougat - I just don't expect to have to check the label carefully for that! Jelly sweets yes, obviously I'm going to check!

PestymcPestFace · 29/05/2018 20:41

Mini Daims may be fine.

Full size cheddars are veggie, mini ones aren't. (This was the case about four years ago).

This has been the case since 2014, it just depends on where they are made.

Some of Birds-Eye steamer Veg are not veterinarian because they also contain Whey. It's mad to think that vegetables aren't vegetarian. Strict Vegans buy organic Fruit because the pesticides/preservers, they are sprayed with are made with animal products. Some Figs aren't Vegetarian.

Also if you want to guarantee that your sugar is Vege, stick to Tate and Lyle. It can also be the sugar that makes something non-vege.

I'm a member of the Vegan and Vegetarian Societies. As soon as the Brexit vote happened, campaigns over food started, because we need to at least hang on to the policies that we already have, but mostly come from the EU.
