Stupid M&S policy. AIBU?

Apples and grapes, £2.90 each or 2 for £4.

The grapes had a yellow sticker having been reduced to £2.05 as sell by date was today.

Got to the checkout and it came to £4.95. I queried this and pointed out that had the grapes been full price I would have got both items for £4.

Checkout person got quite aggressive and said it wasn’t possible to get them as a deal. So I said ok, and walked away. He continued to practically shout after me “it’s not possible!” Confused

AIBU to think this is a ridiculous policy?

He was wrong, obviously and M&S top bods will cringe reading this - which they will.

I disagree that he was 'obviously' wrong. It states clearly on M&S yellow stickers that 'these reductions cannot be used in conjunction with any other offers'. Perhaps a more experienced, or friendlier, checkout assistant might have been nice and scanned the full price grapes twice. But they're under no obligation to.

I once picked up a reduced sandwich in M&S and then noticed that you got a free bottle of water with each sandwich. I didn't think I'd be able to get one with a reduced sandwich, but asked anyway and, as expected, had no luck. I wasn't annoyed at the checkout assistant though. Reduced food isn't part of the promotional offers, it's as simple as that.

I posted similar a few years back as I couldn’t buy what I wanted because there was no way I was paying my more for something that was reduced for a short date. I took to Twitter and they told me this was absolutely correct and in line with their policy. So I think their head office will be quite happy.
In my experience m&s have the rudest staff of any on the high street. Last time I was in the member of staff emptied her pockets in front of me on to checkout, including some snotty hankies, whilst waiting for the receipt to print out. The time before the checkout operator managed to put through a cash sale rather than a card sale and then proceeded to tell me it was my fault because i’d Inserted my card too early. I think I have an alert on my sparks card that says treat this customer like shit.
YANBU m&s is on its knees for a reason.

On the other hand, I visited M&S at the weekend with a friend who wanted to buy a new baby card. It was priced at £3.50 but at the till it came up as 1p. The assistant went off to query it with someone but then came back and said she would charge us 1p. Not sure if maybe she was just using her discretion but we had no complaints!

forced to pay more for a substandard item. Grin at gunpoint? Strongarmed out of your purse? are they arming M&S staff now?
