Has anyone paid to go in? We were going to visit at the weekend but it would have cost us £35!!!!! What is so amazing about it?

If you go late afternoon, an hour or 2 before closing time, you can get half price entry (or at least you could when I last went 6 years ago). I think it’s otherwise a bit overpriced. It’s very pretty and has some lovely views and some nice shops but it’s not very big.

LighthouseSouth · 29/05/2018 15:08

you mean for 2 adults and 2 children, judging by the website?

sounds about what I'd expect. We are planning to go and I would have guessed at those prices.

Mailfuckoff · 29/05/2018 15:10

Dh is a big fan of the prisoner so it was worth the entry fee for us, just 2 adults as it was pre children and we spent most of the day there.

BestIsWest · 29/05/2018 15:15

If you go for lunch at the castle at the top you can (apparently) get in free. I say apparently because I was told this but it was fully booked when we went so best to check.

BestIsWest · 29/05/2018 15:16

*Castell Deudraeth Hotel

Hoppinggreen · 29/05/2018 15:19

We did - and wished we hadn’t
Nothing wrong with it, just pricey to look round a village

Pippinfi · 29/05/2018 15:20

If it is & £35.00 for a family I think that's fair, cost us more to go to our local aquarium which I was disappointed in as we'd been round it in an hour. Portmerion is beautiful and you don't have to be a Prisoner fan to enjoy it. Just make sure you go in good weather to really enjoy it.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 29/05/2018 15:22

We went on a day that it was pissing down with rain, and it was still a great day out. Would love to visit again in better weather, it's a great spot if you're interested in photography.

millimat · 29/05/2018 15:57

Interesting views - thanks. Is it 'just' a village or am I missing something? I know it's a setting for the prisoner.

That doesn't sound bad value tbh, it costs money to maintain the place.

TamzinGrey · 29/05/2018 16:09

It's not "just a village". There are acres of beautiful woodland to explore and huge stretches of golden sand. We go every year and stay for a week in one of the cottages. Not sure that I'd want to be there in the height of the summer season though as I've heard that it can get horribly crowded.

robotcartrainhat · 29/05/2018 16:11

I absolutely love Portmeirion and have been loads and loads of times. Always go if we are nearby in Wales.
It really depends what you are into! If you are a fan of The Prisoner OR you are into quirky architecture OR gardens/gardening then you may well love it.
If you arent interested in those things then give it a miss as thats what it is basically.
Its just the setting. Which people tend to either love or cant understand why anyone would pay to be there at all.
Its not even really a village in the sense that theres anything much to do village wise... theres a couple of cafes and three shops, one prisoner themed, one sells the pottery and one just sells random gifts.. and the hotel of course. Its pretty much just about the quirky buildings and statues.
I personally think its gorgeous. But if its not to your taste then you probs will feel a bit ripped off

Amanduh · 29/05/2018 16:18

we went and it was beautiful

Quickerthanavicar · 29/05/2018 16:27

Though before I first went as a child you would be able to go in the houses and have a look round. Found it sad, small and up itself.
Went back as an adult and found it the same.
Catch the steam train lots more fun.

TamzinGrey · 29/05/2018 21:19

Why on earth would you think that you should be able to get inside the houses ? Do you expect to walk into houses in other picturesque villages ? We spend a small fortune to rent a cottage there each year and it really pisses me off when entitled people try to force their way in to have a look round

Quickerthanavicar · 29/05/2018 21:28

I think I said as a child I thought...
but clearly the people who rent are so friendly.
Start up the bulldozers!

millimat · 29/05/2018 21:31

Tbh I'd expect to know what I got for my money and that's not clear. What annoyed me was that the leaflets do not even tell you that there's an entry fee when you get there!

jamoncrumpets · 29/05/2018 21:33

Did you not do any research before you went?

EggysMom · 29/05/2018 21:35

We paid happily but then, being older, The Prisoner has more resonance with us. I even had a t-shirt made specially for our (then a toddler) son to wear that read "I am not a number, I am a free child!"

ForalltheSaints · 29/05/2018 21:36

I noticed contribution number 6 mentioned the hotel.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 29/05/2018 21:38

How can you be charged to enter a village? Is the whole thing privately owned?

missedith01 · 29/05/2018 21:39

We've been and the kids (5 and 7 at the time) loved it and had a very enjoyable afternoon.

millimat · 29/05/2018 21:41

@IWannaSeeHowItEnds that's what I'd like to know!

I think you have to pay to go into Clovelly.

GladAllOver · 29/05/2018 21:45

Yes it is privately owned.
