I hate the food on holiday

pandarific · 28/05/2018 18:46

Gutted. We’re at a villa in Greece with PIL, I’m pregnant. This villa (organised by PIL) comes with a ‘chef’, who you give money at the start of the week and they cook breakfast lunch and dinner.

It’s run by an English lady, who manages the chef - all we got asked was ‘are there any vegetarians?’ and one person has said they don’t like fish - ‘oh okay, good you said as we have fish three times this week.’

My problem is... The food is cooked fine, but it’s very, very plain and the same thing over and over. I can’t have a bloody drink, I LOVE food anyway so was really, really looking forward to nice food on holiday. Varied, interesting, with nice desserts, stuff I wouldnt have at home - holiday food, iyswim? I could honestly cry.

For lunch yesterday it was spinach and feta pie, plain tomato onion olive pepper and cucumber salad, a loaf of bread and a slab of feta. Fine - bit dull, but fine.

For dinner yesterday it was plain cooked chicken (no sauce of any kind) cooked potatoes and the same salad. A loaf of bread, a slab of feta cheese. An odd orange cake for after which was strangely wet inside and not very nice. ...again a bit dull, but fine.

For breakfast, it’s been eggs, a loaf of bread, Greek yoghurt, jam, cut up fruit. Oh or cornflakes. (Three large packets of cereal, all bloody cornflakes. WTF?)

For lunch today, it was the chicken from yesterday, the spinach pie from yesterday, a slab of feta, a loaf of bread, and salad.

We have just had dinner. I had a word with myself beforehand as I’m beginning to get severely grumpy and struggling to hide my rage, and everyone else, DH included, seems to be delighted with it. I was thinking I shouldn’t pre-judge it, I’m sure she’ll do something different, etc etc. Can you guess where I’m going with this?

Plain grilled chicken or plain grilled pork (Shock), no sauce of any kind, the same salad, a slab of feta, a loaf of bread, the spinach pie again. Nothing for after.

I am fucking gutted. I KNOW I am putting too much importance on this, but I can’t have anything to drink, I’m pretty bloody food focused anyway and now I’m pregnant I’m dying for nice, interesting food to relieve some of the massive fucking boredom of being pregnant, and I was SO looking forward to this. Idk if I was stupid to expect something better, I’ve never been on a holiday like this before, wasn’t . No shops open at the min as it’s a public holiday - I have privately moaned to DH and he’s said we can go to the supermarket .

If I see that fucking salad again I may scream. Please Mumsnet, I know IABU - hand me a grip someone?

High why would you think it appropriate to advance search the OP & post that? Out of order-the only unpleasant one here would be you Hmm

UnicornRainbowColours · 28/05/2018 19:44

You don’t sound unpleasant you sound normal!!!

I wouldn’t want to eat that every day on holiday either. Go to supermarket buy some snacks and nibbles etc

and suggest going out one night.

RoseDog · 28/05/2018 19:44

Surely if your pregnant you have uncontrollable cravings meaning you must stock up on tasty things, to be fair the menu doesn't sound awful but pretty boring and bland!

marjorie25 · 28/05/2018 19:45

formerbabe :
Love your comment. Definitely more than first world problems.
How serious issues as well.

lardymclardy · 28/05/2018 19:46

I had actual tears over a cheese sandwich when I was pg.

Laughing at the replies!! I went fucking mental over a bacon sandwich! You've doused this in salt! No I haven't... Couldn't eat bacon, or curry (my 2 faves) for the entire pregnancy. Had a penchant for cream cakes though Grin

It's you're holiday, speak to the chef or go and stock up on what you are craving. Shit food is naff. Enjoy the rest of your time!

And for the other person saying it's better a pregnant holiday than one with children - I completely disagree. Mine are 21 and 9.

Highhorse1981 · 28/05/2018 19:46

I’ll bow out!

halfwitpicker · 28/05/2018 19:48

Yeah man, self reflection is needed op. Not suggestions of kleptopika or whatever shite

Highhorse1981 · 28/05/2018 19:48

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom

Because I knew I recognised her from another thread and wanted to check which one. It wasn’t that one but i chuckled when I came across it.

GreatWesternValkyrie · 28/05/2018 19:49

You do sound a bit desperate to distract yourself from not being able to have a drink, but as I rarely drink and you may be someone who loves wine with food, that may actually be reasonable on your part Grin

I don’t think YABU regarding the repetition of the menu, it sounds like it is based on some traditional Greek recipes but even so, there are plenty of options to serve different dishes each day, assuming the person arranging it has the imagination and knowledge to offer that. No taramasalata is unforgivable though!!!

What’s the pudding situation like? The cake you described sounded like it might have been an olive oil cake - I’m not a fan of those either.

Honestly, I’d say outright to the people cooking/menu planning that you’re really looking forward to trying some other traditional Greek dishes and ask what they’ve planned for the rest of your stay in an excited manner! ( maybe have a napkin tucked under your chin and be wielding a knife and fork for extra emphasis Grin )

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 28/05/2018 19:49

I can't believe posters are calling OP entitled because she expects decent food on holiday. How ridiculous- food is an integral part of many people's holidays and it doesn't make you entitled to be disappointed if it's not very good (which it isn't by the sounds of it!) .

The poster suggesting OP has a drink problem because she's missing not having a drink on holiday. Even more ridiculous. What an odd comment.

Go out OP and find some nice food!

Babybearsporij · 28/05/2018 19:49

supersweet things that are like honey soaked shredded wheat Baklava.... mmmmm..... See also, halva. Yummy!

Your in Greece. What were you expecting? I married into a Greek family. Greek food is definitely not plain!!

YANBU OP, get thee to the supermarket, or maybe as others have suggested, have a word with the chef. Yes it's a first world problem, but how many of you people criticising the OP would be happy with the plain stuff? Hope the holiday improves!

Whatsnewwithyou · 28/05/2018 19:50

This food would annoy me and I'd be upset too, OP. Yes it's a free holiday but assuming you work you're having to use your annual leave so it's costing you that at least. Plus being on holiday with PILs isn't that relaxing for most people and you can't even have some wine to take the edge off. Oh well, it will get better tomorrow after your supermarket run.

roses2 · 28/05/2018 19:50

This is the problem with going all inclusive.

Why didn't you opt to go to local restaurants? The food in Greece is delicious!

exLtEveDallas · 28/05/2018 19:51

stifado (stew, usually pork or rabbit), kleftiko (slow cooked lamb), yemista (stuffed vegetables - tomatoes, peppers, etc), moussaka, loukanika (Greek sausages) or spetsofai (sausage casserole), soutzoukakia (meatballs in sauce)

^^ THIS

Plus Dolmades, Gyros, Paidakia and Loukomades... where is all the decent food? And you people telling the OP she's ungrateful etc, what sort of shit Greek holidays have you been on where the food she's been served sounds good? It sounds bloody pitiful.

OP, get yourself out tomorrow and have a decent meze. I'd be bitterly disappointed and I've not got pg rage!

Amummyatlast · 28/05/2018 19:51

I'm not interested in food in the slightest and the menu would suit me fine. But when pregnant, I was obsessed with watching come dine with me and salivating over the food. I walked round Sainsburys in a rage because they didn't have any chicken and bacon sandwiches. I briefly considered buying my own ingredients, but didn't because it wasn't the same. So I can appreciate how disappointed you are.

jamoncrumpets · 28/05/2018 19:52

Def request something. We had a villa with a chef last summer, she was a local woman and was bloody AMAZING. We ate like kings. I think if you're paying for the service it's ok to expect more.

Buxbaum · 28/05/2018 19:53

Can you safely eat feta when pg?

Yes.

pandarific · 28/05/2018 19:54

@Highhorse1981 oh come now - to be fair the lady I described in that thread was a very vocal and very extended whingebag. I am a very quiet (anonymous Internet forum) whingebag, so totally different. Wink

(She was also someone I disliked for other reasons, so it is possible I viewed her moans with an especially fishy eye.)

OP posts:
CurlyWurlyTwirly · 28/05/2018 19:56

I would request what you want to eat. The chef sounds crap

Tinkobell · 28/05/2018 19:56

Depends how much you've or ILs have paid for this holiday. If it is 3 star and you've paid a 3 star price don't expect 5 star food.

GabsAlot · 28/05/2018 19:57

can u say you need to eat different things for your cravings and go out couple of nights

blame it on pregnancy

BusySittingDown · 28/05/2018 19:59

One of the best things about being on holiday is the food! I’m not surprised you’re a bit pissed off, OP.

We’re in Barcelona at the moment and OMG, we’re enjoying the food so much. There are loads of nice places to eat and we’re filling our boots.

And you’re allowed to be a princess when you’re pregnant. I had a hormonal, sobbing meltdown over a bar of galaxy chocolate in the middle of Tesco when I was pregnant.

PompholyxOfUnknownOrigin · 28/05/2018 19:59

Aw this is such a shame because Greek food can be fabulous (even without fish).
I'd be asking them to provide yemista (stuffed peppers, stuffed aubergines and so on) and those fabulous aubergine "slippers" (halved aubergines with minced meat, garlic, tomatoes and cheese). Utterly fabulous.
I think the unfortunate chef is catering to the lowest common denominator.
Alternatively, just go out for a few meals with your OP. Say you need extra iron because preg, or some similar excuse.

AStatelyPleasureDome · 28/05/2018 20:00

I think there are some nasty green eyed monsters on this thread!

I feel your pain. Raid the supermarket for delicious nibbles, chat up the chef and say you would particularly like to try some Greek specialities, and yes, go out to the local taverna!!

expatinscotland · 28/05/2018 20:01

'And you’re allowed to be a princess when you’re pregnant. '

Oh, please!

If there are a group of people and they're all happy with the food you don't get to dictate a change of menu because you fancy it.
