To limit my dog's toys to one at a time?

About two months ago I got put on quetiapine- I don't know if it's connected or not but after a lifelong state of not being at all houseproud, I'm suddenly obsessed with my house being spotless.

I have a dog, a little Frenchie who I love to bits but he has toys scattered all over the house. He plays with them for 2 minutes and then discards them in various locations so we have ropes, balls, stuffed toys, bones etc all over. Sometimes he'll literally pick one up, carry it to the living room and drop it there with no intentions of playing with it! I'm finding it frustrating and messy! WIBU to let him have one toy out at a time? (And swap them throughout the week)?

Yes dogs really need different textures to chew on so different toys, can you Have a toy box that he can access and put them back in there

unintentionalthreadkiller · 28/05/2018 16:54

Really? Yabvu.

Saucery · 28/05/2018 16:55

Not at all. We’d be swamped by Kongs, tennis balls and tuggies if we let our dog get all her toys out. And once you’ve stood on a well chewed Nylabone in bare feet you know about it - worse than Lego!

We have a basket in the living room and she is only allowed to get one out at a time. She is also able to ‘put it back’, would you be able to train your dog to have a go at that?

AlexTurnersMrs · 28/05/2018 17:02

No he's a Frenchie, he's a bit thick. He can manage "sit" and that's about it.

What’s a Frenchie?

AlexTurnersMrs · 28/05/2018 17:08

French Bulldog, he's beautiful and I love him dearly but he doesn't have much going on between the ears. He's still not housetrained at 2 years old so getting him to put toys away etc is a non starter.

Dogs like lots of toys. Ours has a basket for his toys, and we put them all in the washing machine (kongs and all) with his blanket from his bed once a week so they are clean. Every day we put them back in the basket and it his job to take them all out again, which he does very well :-)

Katinkka · 28/05/2018 17:36

Don’t be so mean. Ffs

Wolfiefan · 28/05/2018 17:38

Isn't there a line between all the toys out and one you out? We have a few scattered inside and a few outside.

VogueVVague · 28/05/2018 17:43

So you havent housetrained your dog and now you want to restrict his toys. Wow.

Wolfiefan · 28/05/2018 17:44

Ouch I missed the not housetrained comment. Why on earth not?

WombatStewForTea · 28/05/2018 17:44

Unless he has a medical issue he should be able to be house trained.
'Not much going on between the ears' or not. I'd suggest it's your approach to training him and surely if you were houseproud you'd be more concerned about not having piss everywhere than toys lying around

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 28/05/2018 17:44

The carrying and dropping is the playing.

agedknees · 28/05/2018 17:45

This is what you need.

To limit my dog's toys to one at a time?

@WombatStewForTea
Grin

Yeah! Doesnt dodging dog shit bother you more than the odd abandoned Kong?

Eryri2018 · 28/05/2018 17:48

Split the toys into sets with each set having a chew toy, a soft toy, a tug toy and an interactive toy. So only ever 4 toys out at any one time and then swap the set every few days or week. The dog will love it and you will have a more ordered house.

One toy only is probably a bit unreasonable.

PremierNaps · 28/05/2018 17:55

Unless medical the house training is all on you not that your dog "hasn't got much going on between the ears" I'd be more concerned with his house training than toys scattered every where to be fair.

BiteyShark · 28/05/2018 17:58

I think you should focus on getting him housetrained rather than worry about how many toys he has out. We don't have many out but that is because he only likes a select few.

TemptressofWaikiki · 28/05/2018 18:07

Bloody hell! Not housetrained at 2 years???!! You have re-affirmed my general opinion of clueless Frenchie owners. Yep, toys would be the least of my issues.

AlexTurnersMrs · 28/05/2018 18:10

Getting a Frenchie wasn't my idea. I'm used to clever dogs and have only ever owned working dogs. Frenchie is adorable but like a teddy bear, great for a cuddle and a laugh, not much else.

RadioDorothy · 28/05/2018 18:12

The dog is smarter than you think.

Wolfiefan · 28/05/2018 18:13

No dog is so stupid they can't be housetrained. Unless there's a medical issue then it's down to you not training the dog. Why haven't you bothered?

WombatStewForTea · 28/05/2018 18:14

Nonsense OP they're quite capable of being house trained!

I think I remember a previous post of yours now. You clearly don't like the poor thing Hmm

Eifla · 28/05/2018 18:16

I always rotate dog toys. Keeps play value high if they don’t have the same ones laying around all the time.

I lost my old dog last month, but would only ever have 3-4 down at a time, then swap them out each week. Fully intend to do the same when new pup comes along.

A whole bunch of toys ignored 99% is duller than a select few that get kept fresh & exciting. One chewer (nylabone, Kong etc), one rope toy, one ball and one other of whatever kind your dog likes best is a good mix, IMO.

AlexTurnersMrs · 28/05/2018 18:18

Oh I know that, he's stubborn and a tad manipulative - knows he's not supposed to piss in the kitchen but waits until he's out of sight and then does it. He knows he's not allowed to rip the sofa to bits so never does it while we're around, he waits until he's out of sight and then does it.

The other day my teen son and I had a play fight, my tiny Frenchie launched himself across the sofa, plonked himself on me (separating me from the "danger") and stood there, defiant, brave, protective but shaking with fear. Made me realise that little dog, in his eyes has just put his life on the line to protect me. I love him dearly, I know he's not thick, he's beautiful but bull breeds are a force to be reckoned with when it comes to training and I'm not used to it - I'm used to dogs that want to please. Of course it's my fault he's not trained, but he's not reading this so it's ok if I blame him.
