Noisy Neighbour

My neighbours teenage son is currently playing electric guitar in the back garden, and singing... badly

I know it's a warm, sunny bank holiday, and I don't want to spoil the lads fun but I'm trying to study for an important exam on Thursday.

It wouldn't be so bad if it was melodic music. But this is a repetitive caterwauling din. Am I being unreasonable in thinking he should play indoors with the window shut so as to minimise the impact?

I'd ask him if he'd mind saving up his guitar playing/singing till after you've left for your exam on Thursday....

ExamExam · 28/05/2018 16:33

I think someone else who lives nearby has complained, he has gone inside now. But I can still hear the noise, and we live in a detached house!

Maybe your neighbour has been on MN!

ExamExam · 28/05/2018 16:43

Hahaha, I hope not! Blush

What if it was excavation work next door or roadworks? Life can't stop because people have exams! Ear plugs.

ExamExam · 28/05/2018 16:52

I would take roadworks any day over the singing 😂

Good on him for having a go tbh. Doing something you enjoy doesn't always mean you're good at it, pretty mean comments to be making about a kid really.

BackforGood · 28/05/2018 18:05

I too feel he has as much right to be having a sing in his garden as you do to do what you want in your garden.
If you've signed up to exams, then find a quiet spot, or put whatever your relaxing music is, and crack on.

So yes, YABU

soggydigestive · 28/05/2018 18:16

YANBU - why doesn't he play it indoors Confused
People who make loads of noise in their garden are selfish (unless they live in the middle of nowhere of course)

ExamExam · 28/05/2018 18:54

I don't think it's mean to say he isn't very good, it's true! I don't begrudge him enjoying himself, I think it's great he has a hobby, and clearly he needs the practice.

If it was normal singing with say an acoustic guitar it wouldn't have been so loud, but he had amps and a mic out in the garden. It was like being at a full on festival.

I wasn't in my garden, I was in my bedroom at the front of the house! Even when he went inside I could still hear the noise. Surely there comes a point at which a neighbours noise becomes excessive and unreasonable?

I would go somewhere quiet to study, but the University have much reduced hours and only a couple of libraries open due to the bank holiday.

I can't believe you're having to justify yourself

People are so often unthinkingly selfish.

I wonder....Those who say yabu and that you should live and let live...,would they truly not mind if they had to listen to the noise all day? I cannot imagine there are that many people who would be so benevolent. I reckon these people are the noise makers themselves Wink

You sound very reasonable so of course, yanbu

BackforGood · 28/05/2018 19:53

But no-one has suggested for a minute he has been out there, or intends to be out there "all day" Muse

I do actually have a teenage boy next door who takes his electric guita, amp, singing voice, and (I presume) 'bandmate' out on his patio sometimes, and sings out there. OK, I'm slightly lying, he's now had his birthday and is 20, not a teen anymore, but he's been singing for a while. He is perfectly entitled. At 4am, I would be objecting, but he doesn't do it then, he does it in the afternoon or early evening. I'm pretty sure there are times they are disturbed by someone from in our house. It is what happens when you live near to your neighbours.

SmashedMug · 28/05/2018 19:55

Yanbu. I think anyone saying they wouldn't be irritated by someone caterwauling in the garden along with a not so great bit of guitar is telling poooorkies!

LighthouseSouth · 28/05/2018 19:56

He had amps and a mic?!

I feel for you.

LighthouseSouth · 28/05/2018 19:58

"'m pretty sure there are times they are disturbed by someone from in our house. It is what happens when you live near to your neighbours"

Ha ha ha ha ha NO.

AllMYSmellySocks · 28/05/2018 20:04

YANBU. Surely he can practise inside. I think having the odd party outside with noise is fine but practising an instrument can easily be moved inside. I'm super lucky with my neighbours, we all enjoy our gardens but nobody blasts music out there on a regular basis.

BackforGood · 28/05/2018 20:37

No porkies here.
Er, yes it does Lighthouse
Not sure why people think posters who bother to share their experiences must be lying, because it is different from their experience Hmm

Maelstrop · 28/05/2018 20:41

Mike and an amp? I’d have been throwing fucking eggs at him! Where were the parents?

ExamExam · 28/05/2018 20:53

Was your neighbours band any good BackForGood? I probably wouldn't mind the noise level if it sounded nice. He regularly plays very loud music out his bedroom window and I've never moaned about that.

I do agree that a certain amount of give and take is required when living near others. I'm fairly certain we make lots of noise (children playing in garden type noise). I used to live in a terraced house and I wasn't allowed to vacuum or use the food blender after 6pm at night as it upset their kid with ADHD (different house, different neighbours). I thought that was a bit OTT but went along with it.

I think an amp and mic take it to another level though.

The younger kids are playing outside in the garden now, I don't generally mind that sort of noise. The only issue I have is my 5 year old (who was put to bed an hour ago) keeps asking why he isn't allowed outside to play as their 5 year old is playing out still. It's almost 9pm.

And the guitar has started up again...

Where were the parents?

The mother appears to be in the garden dancing along. There is a collection of singing teenagers now. I can actually hear it while I watch TV in the living room.

Drown them out with death metal. No other way.

Er..... not as good as I suspect he thinks he is Wink
