driving in heavy rain

aibu unreasonable to expect drivers on M3 and M25 (my usual routes) to have both rear and front lights turned on on their cars? So many times I have seen cars in the middle lane with no rear lights, almost invisible in the rain and spray, go to overtake them whilst swearing to myself, then in my mirror see that they have FRONT headlights on. How does that work? Why would you choose not be seen from the BACK?

You mean with rear foglights on? Ime an awful lot of drivers put their rear foglights on when it is not appropriate and the glare is awful.

GeekyBlinders · 28/05/2018 13:47

I can’t turn my front headlights on without my back lights coming on. Same with sidelights. Maybe it’s their fog lights? YANBU to want people to use their lights when visibility is low.

My car has running lights at the front which are always on. They don't have corresponding lights at the rear - they only can me on if I turn on the headlights (which I do in heavy rain)

ginghambox · 28/05/2018 13:56

DRL's, I see loads of idiots at night thinking their lights are on.

Tina851 · 28/05/2018 13:57

A lot of people have cars now which have day running lights on at the front. They don't realise that their rear lights aren't on when visability is reduced.

BlueBug45 · 28/05/2018 13:58

Unfortunately a lot of people don't know what lights they have on and how they work properly.

Also some - mainly older men I've noticed - don't seem to care if they can be seen or not. This is great when they have a grey car and are driving in poor weather conditions.

I'm a bit anal as most of my driving is on motorways and I've seen loads of accidents, so when I get a different car I check what lights work and how bright they are.

Trouble is, DLRs are too bright to be used at night, and these idiots are also blinding people, as well as their indicators being obscured

Also some - mainly younger women I've noticed - don't notice when it's got dark and haven't switched their lights on

AornisHades · 28/05/2018 14:03

It always seems to be grey or dirty white cars too for that extra invisibility

specialsubject · 28/05/2018 14:34

yes, I also notice too many women driving in heels which is really dangerous.

shall we leave out the generalisations? The important thing is drive to the conditions - in heavy rain the speed limit is irrelevant, you cannot safely drive that fast. Triple the distance to the car in front, lights on and pay close attention.

pigsDOfly · 28/05/2018 14:42

Those DRL are a menace imo at any time.

So not only are other drivers having to cope with the glare from the front but drivers don't realise their rear lights aren't on they can't be seen from the back.

Wow, they were a good idea.
