To spend £150 on hair care?

I'm having a bit of a wobble!

In the last few weeks I have noticed I am starting to go very noticeably grey along my parting - I have very dark hair so it's really obvious and as I'm only 30 I feel really self conscious about it. I feel like I'm an attractive and well-presented woman but this has really left me feeling old and haggard! Some women look amazing and gracefully grey but I really don't suit it - and it's very patchy. My hair is also looking thinner and duller than it used to.

I want to get it properly cut and coloured in a decent salon but the cheapest I've found in a salon I trust is £120 and they aren't open in the evenings which is the only time I can go. I've found another salon recommended by a friend which will do evening appointments for £150.

Is this crazy money to spend? It worth it for peace of mind? I can afford it, I just don't know if this is what I should prioritise spending my money on!

It's really up to you! If you can afford it and want it then fairy nuff

deary · 28/05/2018 11:54

I have mine properly cut and coloured for a lot cheaper than that.
Depends how you judge whether you trust a salon or not!
I went very grey in my 30's, I have a full head blonde and my roots done every 6 weeks with a cut, costs about £50-60!

GalwayWayfarer · 28/05/2018 11:56

@deary that's really good value!

I know I could find cheaper - my issue is that if it's not a big name salon it's a bit of a risk (I've had bad experience before - think chunky ginger stripes instead of delicate caramel highlights!). I've asked on social media for some recommendations and I am hoping I will find a gem but in the meantime am tempted to take this (expensive) plunge just to deal with it

I pay around £90 every 8 -10 weeks for a semi-permanent colour, highlights across the T section and a cut. That's Gloucestershire though and a fairly small but very busy salon.

My honest advice is that I wished I'd never bloody started with it!! Have highlights across your parting to make the greys less obvious is my advice, once you start colouring it's a 6 weekly commitment to keep doing so bear that cost in mind too.

I gave afro hair and after a wash, treatment and extensions I can spend up to £100. It’s not cheap but my stylist is great and I can keep it for up to 4 months Blush 3 months Grin!
If you have the means then why not.

specialsubject · 28/05/2018 11:59

I spend more than that in an annual blitz on my frizzy mop. this allows me to use a comb, get through doors and look much younger as frizz is very aging.

do it - think cost per wear!

DaphneDiligaf · 28/05/2018 11:59

If you can afford it do it, it's all relative isn't it?

pasturesgreen · 28/05/2018 12:02

It's really no big deal as long as you can afford it. Not much difference between £120 and £150 anyway, I wouldn't mind paying that for the convenience of an evening appointment.

daphine2004 · 28/05/2018 12:03

Have always spent money on my hair, so I’d not even worry about it. To keep costs down see if they have any trainees in who can do it cheaper. It’s still supervised, but can take a while. I went to my usual salon where I have a bespoke creative colour and with my usual hairdresser it’s expensive, but with the trainee who was qualified but building her experience was £100 and that included an Olaplex treatment. Hair is fab as they really appreciate you taking the time and it is double checked before, during and after.

Theknacktoflying · 28/05/2018 12:04

Ask for recommendations, have a good idea a d photos of what you want and go by hairdreser not salon ...
Coloured hair is expensive to maintain and there is nothing better than well cut and managed hair

Hellywelly10 · 28/05/2018 12:04

Ive had bad experiences with chain salons. I think your just paying for a brand. Ive found a great hairdressor on treatwell. Are you getting a cut and colour for £150? Can you afford the upkeep? If so go for it.

JW13 · 28/05/2018 12:19

I started getting grey hairs in my early 20s and after pulling them out for a few years (when there weren't so many) I started colouring my hair when I was about 28. I now have colour done every 5 weeks and cut and colour every other time (so every 10 weeks). It is a pain doing it so frequently but my hair grows really quickly and the patchy grey really didn't look good on me!

I pay about £70 for colour (semi permanent) and £130 for colour and cut l, so not dissimilar to your prices although I go on a Saturday. I'm in london but go to a local salon (zone 2). I've tried a few of the big names in central London but didn't love any of them.

So I don't think you're unreasonable at all in spending that much. It makes a huge difference to how I feel about my hair. But maybe consider a local salon if you can find some good reviews??

SerenDippitty · 28/05/2018 12:23

I pay £130 for cut and colour in a local salon that used to be in the city centre but moved out some 15 years ago. Worth every penny. Never got a good cut from a big name city cemtre chain salon.

RexManning · 28/05/2018 12:26

You wear your hair every day. If you can afford it then a decent cut and colour is one of the things I would always prioritise in terms of spending on my appearance.

SendintheArdwolves · 28/05/2018 12:28

I started going grey very early and have always done my own roots at home with a semi permanent dye every six weeks or so. Its so much cheaper (there is no way I could afford fifty quid every month!) and I'm pretty skilled at it by now. In a few years I'll grow out my grey but until then home dye does the job!

LagunaBubbles · 28/05/2018 12:30

Im 47 and been dying my hair since I was about 14, been growing grey for a while now to. I just do it myself, a box of Schwartkopff Live in Real red costs about a fiver and Im always getting compliments on my hair. (get it cut a salon obviously).

RJnomore1 · 28/05/2018 12:35

Mine cost £192 on Friday Blush

I can't colour at home, the grey doesn't cover properly, I end up with badger stripes and I bugger up the condition.

If you can afford it it's definitely worth it for a stylist you have confidence in.
