To be waiting to fill the neighbour's bin?

ParentInCharge · 28/05/2018 09:48

Standing at my door, rubbish bags beside me waiting for the bin lorry. Neighbour is hardly ever here so his bin is nice and empty and mine is full (new bed packaging plus a clutter clear out.)
He's in but I don't want to knock and ask because I think he might still be in bed. The bags will only be in for about a minute.
I'm such a bad neighbour. 😂

(Before anyone starts, no, recycling hasn't made it here yet so not an issue. We're in the dark ages here with our dark grey all-rubbish wheelie bins and still using cassette tapes.)

You don’t have to recycle and get bank hol collections!? And have a neighbour with an empty bin!?
I’m so jealous OP, where abouts are you?

GabsAlot · 28/05/2018 10:36

they never do them on bh here-is it fornightly where everyone lives?

no dont use someone elses bin without asking its rude

VioletCharlotte · 28/05/2018 10:37

I've done this a few timesBlush Neighbour is a single man so bin is only ever half full. Plus he leaves it all the time so I feel it's fair game!

VioletCharlotte · 28/05/2018 10:38

And our bins are always emptied on Bank Holidays here (Hampshire)

Aragog · 28/05/2018 10:38

They collect your rubbish on a bank hol?

They do here. The normal bin collection has been this morning and emptied all the black bins. We have had the recycling bin collected on the BH in the past too. Black bin and recycling bins are alternate weeks, same days.

In Sheffield.

morningconstitutional2017 · 28/05/2018 10:39

I would put a 'I hope you don't mind' note through his letterbox just in case, adding that if anything such as a leak happened you'd be happy to clean his bin afterwards, just to show willing.

It's the polite thing to do.

SparklyMagpie · 28/05/2018 10:39

Bin men on a bank holiday?!?!

Butterflykissess · 28/05/2018 10:42

She had to go and pick them all out of the road!it was around 4 Tesco type bags.

I m in South London and they don't collect them in my area on bank holiday and your usual bin day gets pushed back a da y so mines Thursday but they will collect Friday.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 28/05/2018 10:42

they never do them on bh here-is it fornightly where everyone lives?

Same here ours are collected on a Monday (except bank holidays then it the Saturday before) We have general waste on week A and on week B it is recycling/Garden waste. I thought most places were fortnightly now and I honestly thought everywhere had implemented a recycling scheme of some shape years ago.

Snape · 28/05/2018 10:44

I always use my neighbours bin Blush In my defence, I only put rubbish in on the day it's going to be collected. However, he works away for weeks at a time so I doubt he would notice anyway.

ciderhouserules · 28/05/2018 10:46

I'm in Surrey and they've been today. They only come once a fortnight, (every other week it's the green 'compost' bins) so I always worry I've got the wrong week and put the wrong bins out.
We have recycling tho.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 28/05/2018 10:52

Ah cassette tapes. I still remember the mix tape my first boyfriend made for me. It even had all the titles and artists hand written on the little card insert.

I hope you're right about your bank holiday collection OP! Otherwise you're in for a long wait. Grin

Cindie943811A · 28/05/2018 10:53

Just put it in and put a note through his door. If you think you may need to do it again in future give him a bottle of wine.

PeterPiperPickedSeaShells · 28/05/2018 10:55

Hang on...? You have rubbish collection on a bank holiday? Where do you live? I want to live there...!

Icequeen01 · 28/05/2018 10:56

Collections on BH here in Kent too. They have been this morning. One week it's general waste and the next week it's recycling. We also have fortnightly garden rubbish and they came early this morning too.

Elphame · 28/05/2018 10:57

My bins have just been emptied - a lot of councils collect on bank holidays.

Littlemissloopylou · 28/05/2018 11:03

My neighbour across the road has moved out early and the sale doesn't complete for another 3-4 weeks. His house is empty. His bin is empty. I'm having a clear out for half term week and was planning to run to tip...but should I.....?

dancingthroughthedark · 28/05/2018 11:04

Where I live the bin men will not empty a bin unless the lid is fully closed so just make sure it does. I went off to work the other morning, I would usually be out all day but on this occasion had only gone to collect some stuff. Had noticed when I left that a couple of the neighbours had overflowing bins, came back just in front of the bin men to discover my bin overflowing and not shut and theirs shut. Had I not come home when I did mine would have been left. So sorry but I think you should ask first and not just help yourself.

eileandonan · 28/05/2018 11:18

We are in London and bins have been emptied. The bin men will actually pick up any excess bags and stick them into any bin with space before the bin truck arrives. Don't see an issue as long as it's not some nasty fish bag with moisture dripping out the base...Grin

GabsAlot · 28/05/2018 11:25

still weekly here im sure they'll change it eventually but atm we only have black bags no bins so would be right mess

fleshmarketclose · 28/05/2018 11:28

I wouldn't mind anyone using my bin if it was half empty (so long as their rubbish is bagged and tied anyway) so long as they asked. I have two bins as a hangover from when we were a large family so always have one empty bin anyway so happy for neighbours to fill it if needed and even happier when they bring it back from the kerb for me after they have used it.

BirthdayKake · 28/05/2018 11:33

We always have bin collections on a bank holiday here (Lincolnshire).

Eliza9917 · 28/05/2018 11:34

Sometimes -most weeks- we forget to put the Wheely bin in the street and if there's anything in it our bin men take our bin from the garden! They don't put it back though but usually we just end up doing dump runs ourselves.

Flyingpompom · 28/05/2018 11:35

Loving all the angst! I wouldn't give a shite if my neighbour used my empty bin... and as for the poster who said it's illegal...I have no words!

Before wheelie bins, we just had piles of bags outside every few houses, as mentioned by a PP. Brilliant thing was, we are in a different borough to the houses over the road, and we had different collection days. This meant everyone used both days! You'd see everyone wandering over in the dead of night to put them on the other side's piles! It was brilliant, you never had rubbish hanging about for more than 4 days.

QuestionableMouse · 28/05/2018 11:40

I've never understood why people are so precious about their bins. In my street we all use each others... If you have space and someone needs it they can go ahead.
