Hi all

Sorry posted for traffic. For background I'm a widowed parent as DH died of cancer four years ago. DD is 7 and normal very healthy so I tend to freak out a bit when she's sick, despite not generally being an anxious person.

DD has been complaining of headaches since Friday and she also had some in the preceding week. She also says she has some eye pain. She has been stressed/miserable with school tests (this is another story) and obviously the weather is close/hot.

My sensible head says she either needs glasses or she's got tension headaches due to weather and stress. I will obviously get her an eye test on Tuesday and a GP appointment.

Just can't stop freaking out as it's so unusual for her to be ill at all. This stuff is so hard after losing DH. Calm me down please??

My ds had similar headaches, ended up with MRI scan, eye tests etc and turned out to be chronic sinusitis. It is very difficult to diagnose in children.

bruffin · 28/05/2018 09:32

Meant to say it was caused by Hayfever

Grobagsforever · 28/05/2018 09:35

I know @DaisyArcher - I just don't think counselling would help as the incidents are very isolated.

Thanks @ApplesinmyPocket - I know you're right..it's just a nightmare managing this stuff after DH.

Thanks @bruffin for sharing. Any idea if chemist will give me something stronger than piriton to try today?

I dont know Grobags but Ds was given a prescription for 18+ Beconaise nasal spray from the paediatrician at the hospital. It also took 2 lots of antibiotics to shift it, because he had it for months by the time he went through all the tests. His only real symptom of the sinusitis was the headaches

RubberJohnny · 28/05/2018 10:39

Id just keep her on paracetamol and ibuprofen till she is seen. If it's a virus or sinus infectionor she needs glasses, antihistamines won't help.
An optician will be able to rule out many worrying things so phone around more than one today and explain as I'm sure they'll fit her in somewhere.
If nothing shows on that, out of hours GP? Or call first thing tomorrow as it may be sinus pressure caused by an infection which could need antibiotics. There are far, far more innocent things it can be to awful ones, remember that.

bruffin · 28/05/2018 11:11

but the sinisitus could be caused by allergies, and i know a lot of people really suffering at the moment, and in that case yes the antihistamines will help.

Grobagsforever · 28/05/2018 18:19

Thanks again all. She has an eye test tomorrow. Been ok in herself all day, eating, playing etc, hopefully optician can shed some light or it's a virus and will pass

Well after all the the headaches miraculously disappeared after an optician appointment! She doesn't need classes - I think it was a combination of the weather breaking (convinced this is all hay fever related) and the effect of her being told her eyes were perfectly healthy so she could stop worrying..

Glad she's feeling better OP. I've had a muggy head since the weekend, I blamed the storms.

There is something else to consider and it sounds daft, but her hair. When I was a kid I had hair I could sit on. It was also incredibly thick. Every morning it was plaited out of the way. I started to suffer headaches when I was about 5 or 6, the GP's concluded it was the sheer weight of my hair and the pressure it was putting on my scalp. A haircut solved the problem.

Grobagsforever · 30/05/2018 11:20

How bizarre @SistersOfPercy but she does have very long, very thick hair!

OP posts:
SistersOfPercy · 30/05/2018 11:24

@Grobagsforever bizarre indeed, but even now (still have long thick hair) I rarely tie it up because it does cause me pain and a tingly scalp.

Unfortunately my dear old Mum took the extreme option and went full on pageboy cut on my head. Though it solved the problems I was devastated and have been very hairdresser phobic ever since.

FASH84 · 30/05/2018 12:26

I had childhood migraines, I did grow out of them when I hit puberty. Dehydration is often the cause for most but I still get headaches fairly often and things like air pressure and the weather have an impact for me, I've been headachey since Sunday night. I'm also prone to sinus infections/hayfever especially as a child which can give you a tension type headache. Make sure she's had a recent eye test too. It's probably something simple and nothing to worry about

FASH84 · 30/05/2018 12:27

Ah yes I also have very long thick curly hair, even yesterday I had to untie it as after a while the weight pulls and can give me a headache, when it's down it's fine, very tight plaits etc do the same

ApplesinmyPocket · 30/05/2018 15:34

That is fabulous news! so pleased for DD and you Grin Thanks for coming back with an update.

MrMeSeeks · 30/05/2018 15:40

Possible she may suffer with migraines. I had some blinding headaches as a childchild that suddenly vanished until i became a teenager. It was migraines.
They get worse with weather changes too

SparklyLeprechaun · 30/05/2018 15:44

Glad she's better, op. I suffered with constant headaches as a child, had every test and scan available, nothing showed up, doctors said probably migraines. Went away when I was in my teens.

Abitlost2015 · 30/05/2018 15:45

They could also be related to anxiety. You say she is stressed by exams and you are anxious yourself so would not be surprising she is too. I am not saying this as if it is caused by you or your fault but it is another possibility.
