Buy a bike or get a personal trainer? AIBU to expect one of these to make me thin?

Considering getting a personal trainer to sort me out, tone me up and shift the flab before the sunner's out.

Or spending the money on a good bike and just razz round the park every day.

Which is a better investment?

Depends how self motivated you are!

VogueVVague · 27/05/2018 21:52

Definitely personal trainer

AlbertaSimmons · 27/05/2018 21:52

You can't outtrain or outride or outrun a bad diet.

delilahbucket · 27/05/2018 21:53

What Alberta said...

Ummmmgogo · 27/05/2018 21:55

either will improve your health but only dieting will make you lose weight. I normally gain weight when I exercise because all that moving about makes me hungry lol good luck x

Eolian · 27/05/2018 21:55

YANBU to start exercising, but YABU if you're expecting it to make you thin - losing weight is 80% diet. You have to do a ludicrous amount of exercise to make much difference to your weight unless you change eating habits too. I would do Couch25k rather than get a personal trainer or an exercise bike though.

Sorry to be boring, but what Eolian said.

lampygirl · 27/05/2018 22:05

If you work can you get a bike and commute. I do have days where having a sausage and bacon roll and a lunch is justified in my head because I rode my bike my willpower isn’t that good, but that is maybe once every 2-3 weeks the rest of the time that combined with a healthy lunch is seeing me lose between 0.5 and 1kg a week for the last 5 or 6 weeks. I’m doing about 80 miles a week interspersed with driving to work if I need to take any kit. I found this better than a few failed attempts at paying a PT because while I was enjoying the training side, paying for it saw me swap a variety of salads from M&S I actually enjoyed with a £3 tescos meal deal for lunch which was very much sarnie and crisps territory.

Lifeaback · 27/05/2018 22:10

As others have said, neither will make you thin- only a diet can do that. If I had to pick between the two I’d go for a personal trainer though, much more likely to be effective long term as there’s less self motivation required because you have an appointment to keep and someone telling you what to do. Also personal trainer will tone your whole body, bike will mainly just tone your legs/bum

Amatullah · 27/05/2018 22:12

Abs are made in the kitchen..you need to have a calorie deficit to lose a significant amount of weight and the exercise will tone it up

lljkk · 27/05/2018 22:14

They both require motivation.
I'd rather die than have some PT make me feel inadequate or simply centre of attention pressure me. I love exploring out on my bike.
Other folk would get bored witless in own company on bike, would love to have PT to chivvy them along.
What are you like?

Wondermoomin · 27/05/2018 22:15

Definitely a PT but must be one that can help you address your nutrition as well. It's worked for me. Any decent PT will tell you it's predominantly diet that will shift the weight.

Amatullah · 27/05/2018 22:15

A bike will probably be much cheaper in the long run and you could do workouts via YouTube. But personal trainer will help you target certain areas and definately helps with the motivation.

LyricalGangster · 27/05/2018 22:24

Before i got my driving licence i cycled everywhere. 30 minute bike ride to work (and 30 minutes back), I'd hop on my bike to go to the shops, or visit friends or pop into town. I was thin and toned and had legs of steel. But it was my only form of transport, i was young and had that amazing teenage metabolism going for me too!

My dc are now only just about able to safely cycle into town and i plan to start cycling more again.

I go to a local fitness studio rather than a proper gym, they have really small classes and it's amazing how much my general fitness has improved with just a few months of regular exercise.

Sevendown · 27/05/2018 22:24

If you are very sedentary and have a good diet then extra exercise will make you lose weight!

Get a 2nd hand bike and a pt

siwel123 · 27/05/2018 22:26

YABU. Just exercising doesn't make you thin.
Your lifestyle makes you thin. Eating well, being well rested and getting enough exercise.

I would get a gym membership tbh and maybe a few PT sessions rather then a bike
