bank holidays should be axed

traciebanbanjo · 27/05/2018 21:30

Obviously you still have the holiday, but you choose when to have it avoiding places being really overcrowded and holidays being super expensive. It's a right pain in the ass for many couples where one is often forced to work and the other forced to take holiday.

Weren't they originally because people were paid Daily and as the banks were closed so we're the factories.

Stop being so joyless, YABU.

dementedpixie · 27/05/2018 22:34

I'm in Scotland and my kids are off tomorrow. Dh gets the bank holidays included in his entitlement but if he wants them off he has to book them. He hasn't taken tomorrow off

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/05/2018 22:38

Think Glasgow schools are off but Edinburgh had last Monday I think, Fife are next Monday, we (Stirling) only get the one at the beginning of May. Not sure about everyone else

dementedpixie · 27/05/2018 22:39

I'm North Lanarkshire and we are off as is South Lanarkshire

FreeMantle · 27/05/2018 22:41

Bank holidays are much busier round here. Not helped by the shorter shopping hours to boot. So going away is rammed but doing normal stuff is as well Misery.
No good to teachers either as they are already part of the enforced holiday.

ILoveMyDressingGown · 27/05/2018 22:45

I love bank holidays. I'd be gutted if they took them off us. A lot of employers make it quite difficult for you to use your holiday entitlement as/when you want so for us it's great.

Blatherskite · 27/05/2018 23:00

DH works in a bank so a bank holiday is a holiday for all in our house. We also especially like the May ones as DH's birthday is the first week in May so generally falls on the first bank holiday and it's my (40th!) birthday today so I generally get the second bank holiday Grin

HateSummer · 27/05/2018 23:04

Yabu, I like working on a bank holiday and getting more money for it 🤑🤑🤑

FreeMantle · 27/05/2018 23:04

And it's all a bit random on BH's. I thought in was Sunday opening hours. My supermarkets do 9-6 ...? That's not Sunday hours or any sort of a holiday for your staff.
Other shops are closed or open when suits.
I hate them.

So you say IBU but you liked when you didnt have to take bank holidays off

Yes. I was pointing a positive in having to work them sometimes.

You know, looking on the bright side instead of being sourfaced and deciding because I was missing out on something everyone should.

Cornettoninja · 27/05/2018 23:21

28 days inclusive of bank holidays is the legal minimum isn't it?

If you're in the uk gardengreek and any of those jobs were full time in the last few decade or so your employers have been shafting you.

AcrossthePond55 · 27/05/2018 23:31

I'm in the US and I specifically chose a career path that gave me weekends and legal holidays off. DH, on the other hand, had a career in which he was expected to work some holidays depending on shift rotation but was paid double time if he did. Luckily, there were usually people eager to swap days for the extra money so he could usually finagle the day off.

Floating holidays in lieu of legal/bank holidays would be nice, I guess, as long as you didn't need to take school days and spouse's work into account.

Wouldn't work very well here anyway as our legal holidays are supposedly to 'honour' certain people; i.e. Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Labour Day, MLK Day, etc. as opposed to days where it's simply decided to have a day off, i.e. August Bank Holiday, etc. When Vets Days was moved to the 2nd Monday all hell broke loose as it was considered disrespectful to Veterans to make it about a 3 day weekend as opposed to honouring Vets and it was moved back to 11/11, which of course is 'Armistice Day'.

Gwenhwyfar · 27/05/2018 23:36

F off. I need my bank holiday. It's not the same as a random day off as I get to spend bank holiday and the evening before with my friends.

NeverTwerkNaked · 27/05/2018 23:39

I’m on the fence on this. Everywhere is horrendously busy so it’s a useless day for going places. But on the other hand it’s a guilt free day of leave as no one is in the office having to cover

Ruffian · 27/05/2018 23:43

Yabu but I wish they would not let the shops open so more people could have the day off and I wish they would move one of the May BH to October to even them out a bit.

sharkirasharkira · 27/05/2018 23:45

Well, as Monday is one of my usual days off, I'm just losing a day off this week because it's going to be so busy I can't have it off. No extra pay. And as it's half term it's going to be extra busy at work this whole week. FML.

Fucking hate bank holidays. My FB feed is always full of people out having fun and enjoying themselves but all it means for me is working extra hard and extra long for no extra reward. Yanbu op, although I appreciate I am biased as I always have to work all of them. I would probably feel differently if I had a normal jobAngry

Happypuppy · 27/05/2018 23:56

Wish this one would be end of June rather than now.

x2boys · 28/05/2018 00:31

yanbu I used to love taking bank holiday in February or November or whenever I chose it I worked in the NHS for years and my contract stated we got 8 bank holidays a year and could take them whenever was convenient I worked on the wards so even if I was off unless. it was annual leave it was considered my day off so i still got my bank holidays they would even put on the off duty it was a bank holiday Smile

ForalltheSaints · 28/05/2018 06:57

The OP I disagree with. Just wish that we could have a couple more- St David's Day in Wales, St George's Day in England etc, and one to remember all those who have died in wars.

I'd also like to see Sunday trading hours and no large shops on Christmas or Boxing Day, so more people have a day off on Bank Holidays.

traciebanbanjo · 28/05/2018 07:34

If you want all shops closed on Sunday, what about all the people working not on the floor to make sure it can open on Monday fully stocked?

Do you also want to make all businesses (cafe, attractions etc) closed on Sundays also?

adaline · 28/05/2018 07:38

I don't mind bank holidays. DP is off today but I'm working and get double time so it could be worse. He gets to stay home and stop the puppy chewing everything in the house 😂

Loopytiles · 28/05/2018 07:42

Suspect most people would prefer to have it as flexible, paid annual leave, but some employers pay staff for bank holidays in addition to annual leave, it seems unlikely that if there were no bank holidays they would increase the number of days paid leave.

Some employers include these days in leave allowance leaving workers less to take at other times.

So consensus is that people with holidays off think op is unreasonable, those working agree with op. Sounds about right.
