To take a 10 week old to Spain?

Had 2 holidays booked this year which have both had to be cancelled due to medical problems (blood pressure related fainting) as I’m pregnant consultant said it was best not to fly under the circumstances.

I’m really desperate to get a holiday in this year and DS (2) would love to go on a plane. I have a c section is booked for the 15th July so I have been looking at 5 nights in Spain end of September. DP thinks I’m bonkers to consider it while DD will be so little. I’m happy to sit in the shade by the pool and breastfeed her all day if necessary, and I’d rather be sleep deprived in Spain than gloomy England!

Has anyone done it? Is it a totally insane idea to take a young baby abroad so soon?

I took my ten week old to the UK for two weeks...

It sounds great OP, you get to relax and be cooked for, hotel staff will bill and coo round the baby, your son will have a special treat, what's not to like?

Bellabutterfly2016 · 27/05/2018 17:36

I've been to this hotel it's great my daughter was 1. The staff couldn't do enough for us

Yip, took both mine away when just a few months old - much easier when they’re BF.

I took my EBF baby to Portugal at 8 weeks and Spain at 13 weeks last summer. I'd had a c section. It was great! So easy if breastfeeding, easy enough to keep them in the shade. Go for it!!

I took my ds to Spain (mainland) when he was 9 weeks. He was a tricky baby but I had help. Bottle/formula fed too but managed with boiling a kettle of filtered water or using bought bottled water. Passport arrived in time did it when he was 3 weeks old was a great holiday! He's now 18 months and has been 4 times! Have a lovely holiday

First immunisations are at 12 weeks,i think advice is avoid flying until then

DuckDontSqueak · 27/05/2018 18:01

I moved to Spain when my twins were 3 weeks old after a c-section. It was fine. Applied for their passports the day I got out of hospital when they were 4 days old, passports arrived when they were exactly 2 weeks old.

Have fun! :)

Good point abitlost. I remember my doctor telling me to get DS1 vaccinated with the first set of shots before getting on a plane!

catinasplashofsunshine · 27/05/2018 19:29

First vaccinations are at 8 weeks aren't they? Second at 12.

CecilyP · 27/05/2018 19:29

Could you wait till October? We went to Majorca in the October half term a few years ago and the weather was absolutely perfect. Sunshine all day, about 25 - 26 every day and still warm enough in the evening to have dinner outside.

catinasplashofsunshine · 27/05/2018 19:31

12 weeks are boosters for 8 week ones. It's fine to the boosters a week late, as you would if the baby were at all unwell at 12 weeks.

supersop60 · 27/05/2018 19:33

I took my DS at 8 weeks to Spain, but it was April. No way would I consider going in July - it can be 30 degrees or more in the shade!

catinasplashofsunshine · 27/05/2018 19:34

super openning post says end of September, not July.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 27/05/2018 19:35

I took my son to Italy when he was nearly 6 weeks old. It was a doddle. I just took a sling. He co slept at night and loved being in the sling during the day. I also had a 3 yr old so the sling meant I could still have hands free to play. Go for it op!

RockinRobinTweets · 27/05/2018 19:40

@Bellabutterfly2016 please look on a map... you fly over mainland Spain to get to the Balearics Grin

I’m going to wait and see what kind of baby we get & see how birth recovery goes before we try to book anything - if we go it’ll be last minute this year

Caterina99 · 28/05/2018 06:49

We visited family abroad over Christmas when DD was 8-12 weeks and DS was 2.5.

Baby was a doddle. Best age to travel with by far and she slept and fed for the entire flight. Toddler was a total nightmare!
