Replacing car seat..

Pinkpudding202 · 27/05/2018 10:11

Basically DHs friend had left their daughters car seat in our boot.. they don’t have a a car themselves so they weren’t in a hurry to get it back, it got more or less forgotten about for a week or so

DH then had a bad crash (deer ran in front and car spun into ditch and hit wall) it was only a cheap car to get from a to b until we could afford another and the damage would cost more to fix than the cars worth. He got everything he needed out the car but the boot was stuck shut after the damage so couldn’t get friends car seat and a few other bits.

DH has then told friend that he’s really sorry about losing the car seat and he will buy them “any one they want, no matter how expensive and to pick the best one in shop”

Now I know he feels bad and is being generous but 1. We are very low on money at the moment.. to the point we have both had to lend bill money off parents 2. Their car seat was £34.99... 3. They don’t have a car and apparently aren’t planning on buying one as neither of them drive

They haven’t went to buy it yet but the way he’s going on he’s practically forcing an expensive car seat down their throats and I’m 99% sure their going to take full advantage of the offer “well If your sure that’s so kind of you”

Don’t want to sound miserable and selfish but literally we are so low on money right now! I’ve spoke to DH and he just tells me over and over he feels bad he lost their car seat.. -.-

Have you claimed on your insurance? Car seats are reimbursed when you buy a replacement so all you need to do is ask them for the receipt.
Otherwise I think you need to sit him down and explain that you should replace like for like. They don't appear to have been inconvenienced so I can't imagine they will have a problem with that

Thehop · 27/05/2018 10:17

They get the same one back then you use the receipt to claim off your insurance!!! Outrageous of him!

yougogirl150 · 27/05/2018 10:18

No, I'd be annoyed by that too. If I leave something on someone else's property, I see that as a risk I'm taking. I wouldn't expect them to replace it for me if it got damaged and if I was the one that had the crash, I'd expect to claim on insurance for it alongside the car and not be out of pocket for it. If he really has to buy them a new one then it should be like for like. Car seats can cost hundreds and hundreds but they choose a cheap one so that's what should be replaced, if anything.

NoNamesLeft86 · 27/05/2018 10:20

I'd just replace it with the same one they lost. I don't understand why anything more expensive would even come into it.

GrannyGrissle · 27/05/2018 10:21

WTF? Explain to them you are short of cash but will obviously replace like for like and say you've no idea why DP is doing the Lord Bountiful routine when he is piss poor Grin

Pinkpudding202 · 27/05/2018 10:22

He just said it’s too late now I’ve told them and their really appreciative... YES I BET THEY ARE

He just wants to look like the good guy and by doing that is making us all worse off!

Have claimed but they don’t have receipt for seat :/

almost the first question i was asked when some fool wrote off my stationary car was about child seats. they are insured.

im afraid your insurance hit will be a lot more than £35!

Pinkpudding202 · 27/05/2018 10:23

GrannyGrissle that really made me giggle 😂

If it was me I wouldn't have thought about you replacing it. I would take the 'oh well shit happens' approach and thank God that no one was killed or seriously injured.

Allthewaves · 27/05/2018 10:27

Op tell dh to give them £40 and let them.sort it out themselves

Bearhunter09 · 27/05/2018 10:30

Your husband is an idiot for offering. Your friends should only choose one that’s like for like if they have a conscience

dinosaurkisses · 27/05/2018 10:34

I've just replaced a car seat after an accident (not my fault)- extremely straight forward, we just needed to supply the receipt for the new car seat to my insurer, and no need to provide proof of purchase for the old one. It's no skin off the insurers nose as they're claiming back off the At Fault driver's policy, and even if they weren't, it's not worth their time quibbling over £100 or so.

I'd just tell the couple that you're going through your insurance company who are happy to replace the car seat, but only with a similar model.

emmyrose2000 · 27/05/2018 13:37

Are you going through insurance? If yes, then the price of the seat isn't really a concern.

If no, then I'd wonder if my husband had hit his head very badly during the accident to make the offer he did.

At best, I'd offer to split the cost of the original seat with them, so at most it should cost DH £17-£18. It was their fault they left the seat in the car, but not their fault the accident happened.

As an aside, are car seats really that cheap (£35)?! Or was it a booster seat?

Oldraver · 27/05/2018 14:00

Does your DH understand just how much 'the best one in the shop' will cost ? It could be hundreds, what a twat. .
