Funfair sweets

So today my DMIL took my DC to the funfair

She brought my two DC them sweet canes from a sweet van, she paid £6 for two

She brought them home and Iv just had a look at them now (DC don't know they have them as DMIL kept them for me to give them tmrw)

They are filthy one has hair stuck to it and one has pink sugar stuck at the bottom and then has sweets put in

Iv told DMIL I will take them back tmrw to ask for a refund but she thinks that I won't be refunded as it's a food item

AIBU to take them back

I do not want my DC to touch them sweets as the canes they are in are filthy

And I don't want to bin them as DMIL has paid £6 for them both

Do I have a leg to stand on taking them back tmrw?

Let it go and bin the sweet canes. Don't give your MIL a hard time over it. She was kind enough to hide them from the children and give them to you so you can choose not to give the sweets to your children. It was her money (presumably) so it makes no difference to you if you bin them. Yes, they are substandard and I wouldn't be too keen on my kids having them. Reporting them to environmental health seems like a good idea.

WittyJack · 27/05/2018 06:43

I think you could get a lot of hassle for a few quidsworth of sweets.

Tell your MIL - not to sound ungrateful but just so she knows why you've not given them the sweets; she's a grown-up and she'll understand - and get the DC a different treat if you want to (you may take the view they're none the wiser anyway).

The fair won't give a shiny shite. Environmental might - reporting it/giving them the tubes would be the way to go.

MagnifyingGlassSearch · 27/05/2018 06:55

I would empty the tubes, throw the sweets away, give them a good clean, fill them with fresh sweets, give them to the kids.

jkl0311 · 27/05/2018 07:00

Yeah I wouldn't turn up there making a scene or put it on Facebook that stuff makes me cringe. Either bin them or report to environmental health but agree with pp, chalk it up to experience

crisscrosscranky · 27/05/2018 08:01

Just put them in the bin. Is it really worth getting this worked up about some overpriced sweets?

Fatted · 27/05/2018 08:06

I'd just chuck them and get the kids something else similar. Taking them back isn't going to get you anywhere.

BrownTurkey · 27/05/2018 08:10

Fairgrounds are not well known for their customer service ethos. Has mil been ok about it because I would be most concerned about her feelings - you could perhaps have put them to one side with an excuse and explained to the kids later.

MrsICantSayMyName · 27/05/2018 09:01

I'm sure u can get them from poundshop

greystripedteepee · 27/05/2018 09:40

She probably shouldn't have bought them in the first place. Those little chocolate footballs are only about 5p or less each by weight on a pick and mix counter. Chalk it up to experience and buy them something from the supermarket

PrincessScarlett · 27/05/2018 09:48

What a rip off those sweet canes were. Definitely bin them and give the kids something else.

mammmamia · 27/05/2018 11:10

I’m also suspicious of those sweet cones you can get made up for kids party bags. I always bin them, who knows how old those sweets are and they’re usually not wrapped ones. Yuck.

Thankyou for all your replies

@AjasLipstick thanks chuck much appreciated

Just an update: was about to chuck them away, but my DF was taking her DS to the fair so I decided to tag along with my DC and take them with me,

The lady was so nice about it, I showed her she said "oh dear" she did say I could replace but I pointed at several others with the rotten sugar stuck at the bottom she said "would you like a refund" I wasn't expecting her to refund me thought maybe she might tell me to do1 lol,

But I think she knew she was in wrong she was a middle aged women and wasn't threatening at all so quite pleased with that,

The lady said that because they are kept in a tin in the "rain" they might have become dirty" but I wasn't buying that, they had no best before date on, definitely re used tubes,

DMIL has said she won't be buying them again lol and I explained to DMIL I do appreciate her taking my DC out and buying them treats but next time be carful not to be ripped off she was quite pleased with me getting a refund and she's said she will just buy them a kinder egg to be on the safe side now lol

But Thankyou all x

That was a much happier ending than I expected. Glad it worked out @ladybirdsi. :)

Whatshallidonowpeople · 27/05/2018 17:15

Why do you think brought means two different things? And it is "those" not them

ladybirdsi · 27/05/2018 17:17

Thanks @JingsMahBucket

I think you were brave taking them back and really lovely to hear that they refunded you. Just because it's a fair it doesn't automatically mean that the people whose livelihood it is aren't reasonable - as pp have said.

Whatshallidonoepeopke do feel extra, especially clever for pointing out mistakes in other peoples' grammar? Well done you.

ladybirdsi · 29/05/2018 00:05

@TattyFrench

Thankyou Hun x
