To not understand the attraction of a spa day?

Shufflebumnessie · 25/05/2018 21:36

Help me understand....

A friend has organised a get-together that will be taking place at a spa that she is a member of. As such, she can take 4 guests in for a discounted day rate. We'll each be paying £60 for what I can see is the privilege of sitting by a nice pool with optional use of the sauna & hot-tub.
The price doesn't include any treatments (these can be booked on the day but looking at the price list I can't justify their prices!). Lunch will be extra and even the robes cost extra to hire.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone but it just seems an excessive cost for a few hours of chatting and lounging around a pool.

AIBU to feel like this? I've never done anything like this before so perhaps I'm overlooking something. Please enlighten me!!

Haha. God, no. Sounds boring as hell.

Mum2jenny · 25/05/2018 21:53

I've paid in excess of £100 for a spa day, no treatments included, but lunch and morning coffee was included. Free access to all spa facilities, pools, various sauna type things, relaxation areas, robes, outside activities, unlimited towels, exercise classes. I enjoyed it, but it's not everyone's idea of fun.

Angie169 · 25/05/2018 21:55

ugh not for me at all , the thought of sitting in a bath of warm water with everyone eles's dead skin and hair floating in it blugh !

However if you do decide to go can you take your own robe and packed lunch ?

Bluntness100 · 25/05/2018 21:58

Well this is all about perspective.

For many spas this is cheap, it is a discounted rate, spas can go from £ to ££££. Personally it's not my scene but I'd think the price is fairly accurate for that particular spa.

If you don't want to go, don't go. The price isn't going to change, either go and enjoy it or pull out and stay home,

bellsbuss · 25/05/2018 22:03

Ridiculous amount of money for what you're getting. My friends and I normally pay £50 each for two 25 min treatments , lunch and robes

Mum2jenny · 25/05/2018 22:08

Most of the cheap treatments I loathe, so a cheap option including say 2 25 min treatments I wouldn't want, isn't an option for me. I prefer a base price and then pay extra if I want a treatment.

I have gone to cheaper spa days, but don't feel they are that great. Guessing it's each to their own!

Shufflebumnessie · 25/05/2018 22:09

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm definitely going as it's been quite a while since we've all had the opportunity to get together. When it was first mentioned I assumed the price included a treatment of some description, and that you'd be able to upgrade by paying more.
I guess that because I've never experienced this before it just seems like a huge amount of money for very little!
I'm sure I'll have a nice time as it's with good friends but I don't think I'll be in a rush to repeat it anytime soon.

Ugh, no, can't stand the idea. I'm quite happy to go for a swim in the local pool for a fiver.

Clarich007 · 25/05/2018 22:12

Oh no, my idea of hell too.The thought of wandering around, flashing my white wobbly bits in front of strangers trying to relax and paying £60 definately not.I would find it quite stressful really

OohOohMrPeevly · 25/05/2018 22:14

Agree it's expensive. The last one I did in the cotswolds was £50 and that included one treatment and afternoon tea (which they served for us at lunchtime). One perk I discovered was that they had a lot of testers of the very expensive products they sold so I took an armful into the relaxation room and spent a very happy hour covering every inch of myself in posh lotions and potions. One of them was an elemis gradual tanner so I gave myself a free tanning treatment which lasted about a week.

TheFirstMrsOsmond · 25/05/2018 22:28

The idea of a spa day makes me shudder - they are such weird places with people wandering round in robes in an atmosphere of artificial calm.... after 5 minutes I feel agitated and just want to get out and DO something! As a PP has said, I'd rather pay £5 for a swim in the local pool and then go home & sit in my garden. £60 is absurd.

mummyhaschangedhername · 25/05/2018 22:29

That's hugely expensive. I just booked a girly spa day and I'm paying £49.50, for use of the spa, a 30 minute treatment and a two course meal. I wouldn't understand it without a treatment , but I do enjoy having have a leisurely swim and chat, but not for that price.

unicorn56 · 25/05/2018 22:30

I normally use groupon so spend £50-£100 on a spa day, depending on how fancy the spa/treatment is (and this includes the spa access, food (normally afternoon tea or lunch), and a treatment (between 25-55 mins). So to me, £60 on just spa access seems excessive, especially considering thats the discounted rate!!!

Fintress · 25/05/2018 22:32

60 quid for what equates to the use of a pool and hot tub is ridiculous. We both love spa treatments, it's generally the first thing we book up when we go anywhere on holiday. Lying about a spa pool doesn't appeal to me though.

IsaidMrDarcynotArsey · 25/05/2018 22:33

Have you checked out groupon for any current deals at that particular spa?

PurpleTigerLove · 25/05/2018 22:37

I’ve never had a spa day . Doesn’t appeal to me at all .

RedForFilth · 25/05/2018 22:41

What's there to not understand? It's like anything, you either like it or you don't. No need for anyone to sneer at people who do like it just cos you don't. (Last sentence isn't aimed at you op).

LightDrizzle · 25/05/2018 23:01

Not my cup of tea at all. I’m equally baffled. Not as baffled as I am at people’s eagerness to spend hours sharing a giant warm bath of uncertain hygiene, on some decking outside a timber lodge in Leicestershire [or wherever].

YouBetterWORK · 25/05/2018 23:04

60 quid for pool and hot tub is quite pricey, I think if there were some other bits like a sauna/steam room/maybe glass of fizz and a cream tea that'd be more like it.

I love a spa day, am planning one for my birthday when DD should be weaned and will get a good proper massage on!

Something I've noticed to my annoyance lately is that you have some spas with the whole pool with jets, sauna, steam etc and while this used to be complimentary with any treatment around the 60 quid mark, they now want to charge just as much on top for you to use these facilities after your treatment, which is ripping the piss a bit!

MaryShelley1818 · 26/05/2018 06:15

Oh I love a Spa Day!! I love using the sauna and steam room, love just being able to relax and lie and talk to DP or friends for hrs uninterrupted! I’ve just came back from a girly holiday in Spain and had an amazing full body massage there in the spa, I felt like a new person afterwards.

Loopytiles · 26/05/2018 06:20

That price doesn’t seem at the high end for the south east.

Are there lots of different facilities included, eg multiple pools, hot tubs, sauna, steam room, warm room, reading areas?

Bettyfood · 26/05/2018 06:22

I love a spa day, but it should have one treatment or a complimentary lunch and glass of wine for £60.

Biologifemini · 26/05/2018 06:24

Spa days are my idea of hell. It depends on tastes.
I just visualise the whirlpool things to be full of fecal bacteria. Am not a fan of massage. I just don’t get it at all.
They were really the thing to do for hen party’s years ago. Thank goodness that is over for me.

Biologifemini · 26/05/2018 06:25

And steam rooms faintly smell of mould. And after a while the heat makes me dizzy.

Cheto · 26/05/2018 06:32

£60 in our local spa (5 star hotel ) gets you robes, slippers, lunch and 1 hour treatment... so yes that sounds very excessive
