I started a new job five months ago. There was an issue with pay slips, an issue with my pay, then an issue somewhere else internally Confused I got all four pay slips last month, I’ve been emergency taxed the highest rate and I’m now up shit creek as my car insurance needs renewing next month and I need my money back

I wrote a letter to HMRC three weeks ago and have heard nothing

I have a p60... that’s it. No other documents

I want to ring them but I am hard of hearing and hate the bloody phone

How do I get my tax back?

If anyone can help me do this very adult thing that would be great Grin

I think you need to phone them. Explain you’re hard of hearing, put them on speakerphone and have someone with you who can help if you can’t hear them properly.

I got my cheque from hmrc about three days after I rang them. So don’t delay. I’m sure they have special assistance for those who are hard of hearing. Textphone I think it’s called

Contact HR and ask them what they are doing about it

If the answer is nothing..phone HMRC and explain situation

Alternatively if money is tight think about a mthly pyt option as a short term fix for the car insurance

If you're being taxed on a BR code, you need to contact HMRC and ask for a new notice of coding to be issued.

The people who work on the employee helpline are really good and very helpful. Could a friend or family member ring with you present, and you can then do the security questions and they can handle the call?

You'll need to find a way of ringing them. They're very good and will sort it out quickly. Sorry man. Good luck.

Does anyone know if there is just a general number to ring to do this or is it a local tax office, how does it work please. My son needs to claim his back.

Have you checked if you can see it online? You can request the refund on there if you have an account (it links to various tax credits and child benefit etc so you may have an account and not realise)

JosephineBucket · 25/05/2018 17:17

They have a text service www.gov.uk/dealing-hmrc-additional-needs/deaf-hearing-impaired

If it helps, I also struggle with the phone but I’ve always surprisingly found HMRC to be incredibly helpful and really knowledgable. Bite the bullet x

nicknamehelp · 25/05/2018 17:38

If you call them and give permission they can talk to other person. They take ages to respond to letters.

QuackPorridgeBacon · 25/05/2018 19:40

I’d ring, most places have something in place for those who are hard of hearing. I’m not so that’s where my knowledge on it stops. Ringing in my experience is always better and gets things done quickly.

Have you set up a digital tax account?
