AIBU to hate most phrases regarding trying to turn the word ‘children’ into some disgustingly sickly sounding alternative?

So far my list of words I refuse to use to refer to my children:

  • tiny ones
  • little ones
  • kiddies
  • kiddos
  • little poppets

They all make me Confused

I’m not a very maternal person. I love my own children, but in general I’m not a massive fun of other people’s children. Perhaps this is why I hate these words. Grin

What phrases do you guys hate and AIBU?

And just for the record, other phrases I hate:

“Making memories,” to me everything is a memory, I don’t understand this. A lot of my memories are not good ones, so but this phrase all memories are positive. Hmm

  • “pyjammies/jammies” instead of pyjamas. It literally makes me cringe.

Sorry pressed too soon
Eg throwing someone under a bus
But do agree with annoying up your own bottom speak like 'safeguarding issue' and 'raising awareness'.
Plus, what is 'fungible', 'red dip dip' and 'white dip dip'? Also what is 'bae?' Where I come from it means 'bay'.

neurotransmittens · 25/05/2018 23:53

‘Mummy’ used by adults when the ’mummy’ is clearly not their mummy.
‘Trending’
‘Upmarket’
The to-be’s - bridesmaid-to-be, homeowner-to-be, overprotective granny-to-be.
Hearing women calling each other ‘Babe’ (I know there are worse names but at this point I’m usually looking around for a cute pig)
Explanations starting with ‘Basically’
Overuse of the word ‘prosecco’ when someone is wanting/needing/planning/suggesting a glass of Wine
‘Doing’ a holiday, as in, this year we’re doing Portugal

Lalliella · 26/05/2018 00:03

I love you to the moon and back 🤢 🤮

Namechangedname · 26/05/2018 00:16

In actual factual Hmm

Namechangedname · 26/05/2018 00:17

NincompoopsShadow · 26/05/2018 01:09

I hate the phrase 'you guys', as perfectly demonstrated by you OP GrinConfused (ha, sorry)

BobbleHat102 · 26/05/2018 01:29

Amatullah · 26/05/2018 02:58

Boys will be Boys!!!! Grrrr baisically a pass for their pathetic behaviour.. obviously when referred to grown men

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 26/05/2018 04:59

Although safeguarding issue... When you're safeguarding lead ISNT a cliché, is it??

Its a legal term that's used as part of your role......

Being a bit OCD... Is a shitty cliché... Minimising the problem of people who genuinely have Ocd!

comfortandjoy · 26/05/2018 05:27

We “ fell “pregnant .
Can’t stand this . Have never come across it in RL though .

coolwalking · 26/05/2018 05:50

Mr/ Miss 'age of child'

Miss 7 is off to her ballet while baby (THE BABY) sleeps

Peel the veggies, pots, spuds
LEGOS (its fucking LEGO)

SilentBob · 26/05/2018 06:08

I say this on all of these threads but people don't seem to get my oh so subtle hints and still use it: #queenoffuckingeverything GrinWink

Think.

Eg: I have a hobby (think lentil weaving or similar) or

We went on holiday to an island (think Guadeloupe or similar)

NO! Just tell me the goddamn hobby/island/whatever and stop telling me to think!!!

BadLad · 26/05/2018 06:15

I hate the phrase that people use on here when they are exaggerating a very large number.

eleventy billion

Guess how many times I've seen that this month.

Effendi · 26/05/2018 06:44

We are pregnant- no the woman is.
Sippy cup.
Hubby/Hubz/Hubster
Silly spelling mistakes like redicilous or discusting.
Kitchen sups- WTAF?
Picky bits.
Nutritious - when describing food.
Baby daddy- just no.
Trying to conceive- don't know why this annoys me.
Making memories- boak
Let's call him/her- on a thread when explaining the players.
Silly corporate shit like synergies, touch base, blue sky thinking.
I/he/she turned around and said...- what they literally turned around?
A red lip etc.
Pop or dash of colour.
I'm not being funny but....-yes you are.
I call a spade a spade- no you are a nasty git who uses this to excuse your behaviour.

My Mum will say 'Bit of tutty ' which means she's putting her make up on. This sets my teeth on edge.

DameSquashalot · 26/05/2018 06:49

I reckon you've seen it eleventy billion @BadLad - I really hate it too.

I hate a lot of these too. However, I use 'love you to the moon and back' with DD all the time. She loved GHMILY when she was younger and we just started saying to eachother.

DameSquashalot · 26/05/2018 06:53

It's funny though how some of these phrases annoy people so much. Some of them have made me laugh - like Tommy k. 😃

I think spag bol and it is what it is are top of my list with holibobs not far behind

Sophronia · 26/05/2018 07:25

“The Mr”
“Smallies”
“Lil’ man”
“No offence, but...”
“Hubby/hubster”
“Picky tea”
“What’s for sweet?”
“Babe/babes”
“Can I get...?”
“My bad”
“I’m not even joking”
“Snowflake”
“Flaunting her pins”

CoalTit · 26/05/2018 07:57

I strongly agree about the arrogance of using "doing" to mean visiting, as if an entire country is just an item on your list of tasks.
I see a pp has mentioned "tummy" in the irritating baby-talk category (yes! I agree!) but I can't believe no-one else has mentioned "comfy". The person I know who says this in real life has gone from saying "the comfy chair" to just "the comfy" and has also started saying "the pooter" instead of computer.

PavlovianLunge · 26/05/2018 08:21

Apparently ‘bae’ means before anyone else, presumably it’s this year’s BFF.

Starting a sentence with ‘look’ or ‘listener’ makes me do opposite.
Discuss.
Om nom nom.
A cheeky anything (fucker excepted).
This one.
Lickle, ickle and bockle.
Action, gift and medal used as verbs.
Gash makes me shudder, however it’s used.
End of. So dismissive.
Virtue signalling - usually said by people sneering who’ve haven’t done a good deed for anyone since 1993.

I should probably unclench a little.

BadLad · 26/05/2018 08:39

I reckon you've seen it eleventy billion @BadLad - I really hate it too.

Nope.

Eleventy billion and one now.Grin

Glad to see someone else hates it.

SusanneLinder · 26/05/2018 08:54

Thought I'd posted, but can't find it.
Most of the above, except I don't mind Rainbow bridge.Blush
Particularly stabby with "Going forward".
And "You're not wrong"
Also hate words said incorrectly such as
Westminister.Angry
Or Bruschetta pronounced with a "sh" instead of hard "ch".
Furbaby sets my teeth on edge, and I am an animal lover.
Text speak such as "u"
Housecoat...grrrr
Lounge....unless its an airport. Or Lounge suit, or lounge wear!
Sure I have more.

gerbilforlife · 26/05/2018 09:01

The other day, a lady serving me at a shop called me 'angel' in every sentence.......
Hello my angel
Do you want a bag angel?
thatll be 12.99 angel...
just enter your pin angel
and you can take your card now angel

Bye my angel

SusanneLinder · 26/05/2018 09:01

Oh yes...just remembered one that practically makes me violent.
Social Workers and hospital staff ( worked with both), that call parents "Mum and Dad"
"Mum says, Dad says". Either say his or her Mum if you can't remember the name, or use the bloody name. So patronising.
Even worse, post birth" And how is mum today?" .Just fuck off!

libertywoo · 26/05/2018 09:08

At the end of the day...
Also, little man, how’s the little man?? Aw look at the little man. My bil says this, just stop!
Another one, don’t go changing. I once had a really drunk woman say this to me continuously on a night out, made me wonder what I was doing that didn’t need to be changed!

ElsieMc · 26/05/2018 09:15

Yep safeguarding. Our secondary school has huge gates that you cannot now access if you want to pick your children up; it has a camera and guard stood on the gate.

When you go to the headteacher's office, you have to have your photo taken in reception first which is a nightmare when there is a queue. It is at an angle were you have to crouch down and other people appear to be photobombing you as the area is so tiny. Having said that, she is so bloody horrible that it is a scary event in any case.

It is HT's favourite word but I reminded her recently what it actually means and that whilst she bandies it about all the time, she seems to forget her own duty of care. Yes, it means you too.

Also hate "on fleek", is that actually a phrase or word? I presume it means on point or similar. So why not just say that rather than a difficult to pronounce pile of bollocks.
