To just want to smack my head into a wall?!

Just found out after renting our house for 3 months (after the arm and a leg it cost to move with removals, agent fees and add to that the cost of curtains in all rooms as there were none and a garden shed) our landlord has decided to sell and we're out in August.

We planned to stay here to put our DC (2&3) in the school on the same road and be here at least until they had been through primary school. We told the agent this is what we were looking to do before we agreed to take the place, and they said the landlord was looking for someone who would want to stay here as it's a family home.

Fast forward three months and now this. I'm just absolutely gutted. We had to borrow to move here in the first place which we are still paying for and still will be when we get hoofed out. We are in no position to save another deposit and we can't get the one we put down here back until we have moved out. What the fuck are we supposed to do?!

Aaargh i'd want to smack my head against the wall too!

I would contact shelter and ask for their advice.

GrannyGrissle · 24/05/2018 15:33

Smack the Landlords head against the wall instead. Repeatedly. Then make them pay for your house move.

pigmcpigface · 24/05/2018 15:37

Aaargh, I'm so sorry, what a total bastard for doing this.

I would complain loudly to the agents and request that they don't charge you another fee for the next place.

Lacucuracha · 24/05/2018 15:38

What does your contract say? Is there no minimum term?

LanguidLobster · 24/05/2018 15:39

Are they advertising as investment property as well so you can stay?

Definitely check your contract for a minimum term and complain loudly to the agents, ask for no fees on your next rental and for the deposit to be carried across from this house to the new house.

Alternatively can you find out if the landlord would be willing to sell the house with tenants in situ? It's appealing to investors as they don't need to put any effort into renting it out so could be a quicker sale.

Flowers and Cake for you, I've been at the mercy of a selling landlord and it's utterly shit.

SpectacularAardvark · 24/05/2018 17:24

Maybe the landlord has a good reason for needing to sell, I doubt they are doing it to intentionally piss you off. It is shit and frustrating but life generally is.

TeeBee · 24/05/2018 18:38

Gah, how bloody frustrating. This is exactly the reason I ended up buying a house at the age of 25, couldn't be arsed with people messing me about. You have my sympathies OP.

causeimunderyourspell · 24/05/2018 19:15

I know he hasn't done it to intentionally piss us off, but in a nutshell, he has done work around the house on the cheap, bodged it, and now it's coming back to bite him on the arse to get these things fixed properly. So he wants to 'wash his hands of it', his words. He's going to try to sell this house and not disclose I think. I pray the person who plans to buy, pays for a decent and thorough survey to be done.

If we could buy, I honestly honestly would. But we have absolutely no chance. We have no spare money each month to save, as we are spending so much on rent. We failed an affordability on a mortgage about 4 years ago despite paying higher rent for the last 5 years with no payments missed or late. Apparently that wasn't enough to prove we could afford the mortgage.

When he property was listed, it was as a long term let, and now 3 months in we are being told we have 3 months to move out. How can he just do that?!

The alternative is buying a property.

Gee, why doesn’t everyone think of this? Problem solved. 🙄

TammySwansonTwo · 24/05/2018 19:19

What does your contract say?

christinarossetti · 24/05/2018 19:24

hoistTheSales that's really unhelpful. OP is clearly having a hard time and doesn't need such unnecessary posts.

Landlords choose to become landlord and then to stay as landlords. Tenants would often dearly love to buy (as per OP) but can't afford to.

If tenants fuck you over, sell and get out or find tenants that you like. Tenants don't have any sort of protection or power in the UK when they are fucked over by their landlord (as per OP).

persypear · 24/05/2018 19:38

Argh. It is really shit. We have the same so can really empathise.

This kind of thing (spending on fees, movers, etc every 6 or 12 months) is exactly why many renters are less and less able to ever afford a house. It becomes almost impossible to save any money.

The reality is the most LLs look at properties not as homes where real people live, but cash cows.

Also suggest trying the ocuncil but I am sure you are well aware that housing is scarce.

Bangs head in sympathy Flowers
