AIBU to feel I should get an answer?

At the beginning of May, an Ocado delivery man stole my handbag. There was no doubt about it; he was the only one who'd come to the house and walked right by the bag as he was leaving, and we spotted the bag was missing within minutes. At once called Ocado and they asked that I NOT report the theft to the police so they could handle it themselves.

After three days in which Ocado gave us no contact number, left us to speak to different “managers” every time we got through their switchboard, and wouldn’t say anything more than “investigation ongoing,” we told them our insurance required reporting the loss to police, and sent them a copy of our police report.

Three more weeks passed and Ocado kept saying they were “investigating” and would let us know when they had a result and meanwhile we should leave them to it. Then suddenly last night they declared that they’ve found evidence, but are not going to tell it to us because it’s “an internal HR matter now.” They say they will not tell the police either, and will not offer us any compensation or confirm how they will handle the delivery man.

I’m really peeved. AIBU to feel that given I’m the victim, I AM internal to the investigation? And that they should be obliged to report their findings to the police?

I would have been straight onto the phone to the police in the first place, never mind what they said to you. I hope that you have something in writing that they have admitted their driver was the the thief.

Well the police will be able to get the info from them. I don’t know why you didn’t go straight to the police in the first place tho!

FullOfJellyBeans · 24/05/2018 14:52

YANBU. Of course they need to speak to the police with any evidence they have.

LanguidLobster · 24/05/2018 14:54

Social Media. Name and Shame.

emmyrose2000 · 25/05/2018 04:55

I'd have called the police the second I realised the bag was missing, and let them chase the company up. Or, if I had called the company first, the fact they didn't want the police involved would have rung immediate alarm bells and I'd have called the police then regardless. But it's too late that for now.

So what I would do now is call the police, and also get on social media and name and shame. Were there costs involved in replacing cards, keys, etc? I'd be billing them for all that too.

If there admission is on paper, or email, I would give the 72 hours to resolve this or tell them the police will be called.

Angrybird345 · 25/05/2018 06:59

Find the CEOs email and give him the warning!

OP has called the police. It's in the first post.
