AIBU in thinking I should get a grip?! I desperately want to stop smoking but I can’t seem to sort myself out and do it!

I’ve done it before (pregnancy) WHY can’t I do it again?!!!

Go to 'whyquit.com' and read the two books there. Good luck.

Blazingspeed · 24/05/2018 15:22

@Watford

Thankyou! I’ve just been on that site and read a few of the stories... the people who died young.

I’ve just snapped all my cigarettes and thrown them in the bin... 17 of them. Along with my lighters.

I am a non-smoker.

Read the Alan Carr book.

Nicotine is extremely addictive, it’s not easy to stop. Have you tried patches, chewing gum etc.? You will stop in the end, just don’t stop giving it up. 💐

I read an article recommending "mindfull smoking" for giving up smoking. If you light up a cigarette again, really take your time to taste it and really feel the sensation in your throat and mouth. Even if you have smoked for ages, you should still be able to feel the metal like flavour and the way it constricts your throat.

I gave up smoking 10 months, 14 days & 19 hours ago. I miss it, like seriously miss it..i dream about it, i crave it & i want it!

I find myself staring at people who are smoking in their cars thinking how much i would enjoy it more than they are.
At work when the windows are open & everyone else is moaning about the smell of smoke, i have to stop myself hanging out the window in the hope it waffs my way!

Every day is a battle & every day i battle through. You can also..hang in in there.

I smoked for years and years - at least 20 a day - if i went on a night out at least 40 and 40 a day weekends.

i decided to spend £5 on the Alan Carr book - all the way through he encourages you to smoke and to keep smoking but he goes into the psychology of it.

For instance he points out that if you are a smoker and you break down in the middle of nowhere the first thing you do is get out a cigarette, light it and feel better - BUT you are still broken down in the middle of nowhere!

About 3/4 of the way through the book I was desperate to stop but he keeps telling you not to give up - near the end he tells you to light a cigarette, take 6/7 drags on it and tell yourself how much you enjoy it - it makes you feel sick!

I threw my cigarettes away after the end of the book and went out on a big night out and never wanted to smoke once - this was before the ban.

i would highly recommend it....

... if not - have you tried vaping? My husband vapes now - I don't like to encourage it though because i find it an immensely annoying habit!

There's a lovely thread in health stop smoking about quitting (then starting! Then stopping...).

It's nice to see the success stories.

MrsJayy · 24/05/2018 15:34

You can stop it is a bugger but you can stop.

I smoked for 30 years almost bar pregnancy i stopped 15 months ago I have had blips here and there Blush

I did the local pharmacy quit clinic it is a 12 week programme really broke the habit I take it a day at a time but you can do it.

MrsJayy · 24/05/2018 15:35

Btw I like a pp miss it too

ReggaetonLente · 24/05/2018 15:36

Oh god, please quit. You’re not giving anything up, you’re gaining so much.

I watched my much loved dad die last month, aged 55 and 11 weeks after he was diagnosed with a smoking related cancer, in one of the most horrible ways possible. I’m 28 weeks pregnant with his first grandchild, I know for a fact he would have traded every cigarette he ever smoked to get to meet my baby.

I’m no angel, I smoked myself before I got pg, but Christ you couldn’t pay me to pick one up now. Do it for your family, don’t put them through what we’re going through.

The Nicolette Quickmist Spray worked for me! But then on Amazon or get them free on the NHS Stop Smoking bus/group/meetings.

Good luck!

Another vote for Allan Carr's book. I've been a happy non smoking for 15 years now having been a heavy smoker who tried everything possible to give up and failed.

Mirrorwriting · 24/05/2018 15:48

Here is a pdf of the book ‘freedom from nicotine’ whyquit.com/ffn/index.html

I stopped smoking just under two weeks ago. I went out for a few drinks yesterday with a couple of friends who are smokers. I honestly thought if I was going to crack it would have been last night, but the smell just made me 🤢. I think it's safe to say I'm never touching a cigarette again.

I couldn't go completely cold turkey just yet (I have lozenges) which really helps. It's the smell that puts me off now. Never realised how much it stank.

Bobbybobbins · 24/05/2018 15:52

Good luck OP!

My mum has just had treatment for cancer caused by a 45 year smoking habit. She has finally managed to give up.

BarbaraWarpecker · 24/05/2018 15:55

Took me 3 serious attempts. I hated being addicted and trapped by cigarettes. I saw them as a tyrant ruling my life....

I saw stopping as having 2 facets- beating the physical addiction to the nicotine (use patches or whatever) and also breaking all the little habits and associations... first smoke of the day...cigarette with a coffee... at work breaks with other smokers ... on nights out etc

You CAN do it. You WANT to do it. That is more than half the battle. It's so worth it.

FatBottomedGal · 24/05/2018 15:58

I quit cold turkey 5.5 years ago and it was honestly the best decision I ever made. My old housemates came to visit me this weekend and they all smoke, it was quite pathetic to watch them get up every 20 minutes and go and stand outside to chuff away - really ruins the balance of the evening out with friends.

I read Allan Carr's book and didn't even finish it, half way through I was completely done with smoking - he ridiculed me out of it!
