AIBU to take this job?

I've been struggling to get a job. I work part time in Watford but we are thinking of moving to Leighton Buzzard and I've interviewed for one which is within about 20 minutes drive of where we may live.

This job is 40 hours per week and its minimum wage. I have postgrad qualifications in a 'real' subject (not underwater basket weaving) but I've taken a career break and haven't been able to get anything so I don't feel I should be picky and it has room for progression.

The job is a shift pattern job, 8 hours working between 6 am – 11 pm, four days on, four days off including Saturdays.

We would probably need to get an au pair so DC isn't home alone as DH sometimes gets back after 9 pm.

We have not moved yet, so from where we live now it will be about a one hour commute door to door (driving).I'm so desperate for work. Should we take this.

I’d take it, you need a job and this is a job. You don’t have to stay forever but it’s easier to get a job imo when your already in employment.

The commute is what many people do everyday, many people have an even longer commute so I don’t see why that would be a problem for you.

Good luck if you do decide to take it

I’d take it. You can always leave if it doesn’t work out. I think it’s tough out there getting a job at the moment.

It's not the commute that's a problem. It's that it's different times.
Some days I will have to leave at 5am, some days I will get home at midnight. I will know the shifts that month two weeks in advance.

Take it. Many surv8ve d0ing it and having a post grad doesn't make you above shift work.

You.need the job, so do it while looking for something more suited to you

Just take it for the time being. When you move you will be near to Milton Keynes and there are gazillions of jobs for all skill-sets in MK so you really won't struggle to find something else.

WatfordorLeightonBuzzard · 24/05/2018 15:13

siwel123 I'm not saying I'm above shift work. I mentioned the postgrad because it is a minimum wage job and I have spent years studying, put in the work and sacrifice and paid thousands for qualifications in the hope that my salary will reflect that.

The point about the shift work is that I will no longer have regular times that I am at work and this will impact my DC. Sometimes I will leave at 5am. Sometimes I will get home at midnight (depending on traffic). DH also works long hours (leaving house at 7am, some days back after 9pm) so it looks like we may need to pay an au pair (out of minimum wage) to be at home, so it will be more for the sake of having a job and the hope of progression as the costs of travel and childcare will eat into what I earn.

I would take it. It may help your confidence and move up the career ladder later.

I would accept it but keep looking.

They've offered me a 9-5 role. The shifts were growing on me :-).
