the saga of my bloody kitchen, AIBU?

So, earlier this year my neighbours house had a massive water leak which affected my house, namely my kitchen and dining room.

So I claimed on my insurance, both rooms were stripped out and are currently drying. I have a temporary kitchen on my driveway which is better than nothing but not ideal (as I have to go out, down 10 steps every time I want anything from the 'kitchen'). It's been like this for over a month now and we probably have 2 more months of it.

The inconvenience of it is driving me mad. Half the time I can't even be bothered to cook because it is such a faff having to come home from work, go indoors, get the keys and switch on water and power, then go out to it, sit out there for an hour and come back. I know it's not the end of the world but it is irritating.

My insurers are also making the process v long winded. Where my kitchen was taken out the worktops all need to be replaced. I don't have tiles, that area is in the same material as the worktop, so all needs replacing. However the other 'side' of my kitchen wasn't affected so won't need to be replaced, they therefore need to try and match the replacement to the existing worktop.

Originally I was told yes leave it with us we'll find a replacement and if you don't agree it's a match you can pick something else but will need to pay 50% of the cost of the undamaged area. Ok, whatever.

Except nothing has happened. Apparently the insurers thought I was looking for the replacement Hmm. They've now instructed their builders to contact me. All they are doing though is having a look on the internet for what they think the worktop look like based on a photo of my kitchen they've been sent! I could do that myself.

I have had to have a carpet replaced in my dining room, for that a chap came out, looked at the carpet, showed me some samples (which were almost identical) from which I was easily able to chose a replacement. I did think the builders could at least send me some samples - as it is it seems like I'm going to have to tour all the local DIY stores to find my own replacement!

AIBU tp frankly be fed up with the whole sodding thing?!

The latest is they now can't match the style of the worktop as mine has a rolled edge.

Jesus wept.

Not U at all but I fear that this is how they work these days. We had to replace our hall, stairs and landing carpet through insurance last year. Whilst we had a similar experience to you (guy came with samples we chose one etc) it took a lot of arguing to get to that stage. It seems they simply don’t want to send actual human beings out to deal with things. Good luck.

We had exactly this - massive underfloor waterleak meaning kitchen/diner/lounge floor needed ripping out, drying out and replacing. Our insurance - which was only the normal sort, nothing fancy - paid for us to live in a short-term rental property nearby for three months while the work was done. Like you they also needed to replace the worktops, so told us what the budget was and we chose some which they paid for. Sounds like your lot have given you really raw deal. YANBU at all!

Yanbu at all! How stressful and annoying

I had to fight for the temporary kitchen, they were just trying to fob me off with £10 a day for takeaways. I am so sick of it all. It's not like I'm benefiting because they are putting all the old kitchen back. I'm getting some new worktop (if they can find them) but that's it.

I am sick of doing everything myself and constantly chasing otherwise nothing happens. I already have a ft demanding job. I really can do without all this crap!
