Just that really. I find myself and other females within our group are referred as the 'girls' in meetings. For instance yesterday a male colleague said in a meeting 'I'll get the girls to do it'. I find it demeaning but maybe I'm over reading?

YANBU - it's so demeaning and it always amazes me to hear women referring to themselves this way.

Nobody refers to groups of male colleagues as 'boys', although shortly people will be along to tell you that actually it's very common to hear boys in workplaces up and down the country. It isn't though.

That would be me then Grin

Just because you have no experience of something doesn’t make it less true. My dad runs a construction company & on site, 100% of the employees can be men & they’re referred to as “the boys” or “the lads” all the time, I also worked in a bus garage for a while where 90% of the staff were men & again, they were referred to as “the boys” quite regularly. I work for a production company now & the female EA to our CEO & COO refers to them as “the boys” even though they’re her seniors.

I’ve also worked in an all female environment & women referred to other groups of women as “the girls”.

It’s common (and acceptable) in some industries more than others, for example it’s normal for me but my sister who works in a corporate setting would be enraged.

You’re never going to get a board of directors referred to as ‘the boys’ though are you? Tinkety

Eventually we started insisting people pluralise to “Jessici”

Jessicae, surely. Plurals ending in "i" are masculine!

GySgtHartman · 24/05/2018 12:42

Exactly. I knew it wouldn't be long before the "oh men get referred to as boys allllll the time too" started. They bloody don't!

You're right, I lied and am full of shit except... Yes we fucking do. Private soldiers are "the boys" the police were referred to as the boys in blue for years.

It isn't necessarily demeaning or dismissive in every situation.
