My midwife really winds me up!

Probably just hormonal but she infuriates me!

This morning I had a wasted trip to the hospital for GTT and wasn't told by the midwife to fast so because I had eaten I was turned away!

She made a referral to social services due to my past with them when I left home as a teenager and my party animal days. Saw the social worker yesterday and she said the referral made it sound like an omg bad situation and upon meeting me it's definitely not. I asked to read to the referral and there was stuff in it that the midwife hasn't even bought up with me so I can tell her about it, she made me sound like a damaged alcohol abusing mum-to-be - I was furious (good at hiding it).

I didn't mind so much that the midwife felt she needed to make a referral, what annoyed me is she didn't bother to talk to me about hardly any of what was in the report. I'm a fan of communication when it's important things like this!

These are amongst other small itty things, like taking 4 days to get back to me with a new appointment.

AIBU to complain!?

YANBU.

You should make a complaint and ask to be allocated a new midwife immediately. In your letter of complaint you should cite your complaint, state that there is a breakdown in trust and request her registration details from her accredited body. Also, request your full medical file.

It was the hospital that gave me a letter telling me too fast not the midwife although your area may work differently. The social services I can't really comment maybe she was just following rules

How did your midwife find out about your teenage party animal days? Did you tell her?

pastabest · 23/05/2018 11:18

You should have had a letter from the hospital telling you what you needed to do for the GTT? Not sure why you are blaming the midwife for that.

You hadvadvice about the social services referral on the other thread you posted regarding your displeasure that the midwife had done this. I didn't respond to the previous thread and didn't read all the responses so don't know how it panned out overall but as per another poster on this thread I'm presuming you either disclosed this information to the midwife yourself for her to know about it or there is a much bigger concern which means she is aware of it without you disclosing it that you are minimising.

Oh and midwifery services are very stretched. Unless the appointment was urgent does it matter that it took her 4 days to call you with the details of a future appointment? Midwives work shifts like most HCPs so she may have not been on shift, or busy with emergencies, or sick during that time?

For my GTT I was told by the hospital receptionist to fast though I know that anyway because all the baby/pregnancy websites inform you about this ( plus I've had glucose level tests before where I've had to fast).

In regards to the report she wrote to social services you either have a hospital file from before OR it's in your GP notes and they have passed this information on OR you told the booking midwife. Any possible risk to the mother and/or child has to be looked at.

If you are unhappy with her communication skills yes you can complain, and asked to be assigned to a different midwife but you still risk her attending your birth as it depends on shift patterns.

I am moving so will be changing shortly anyway.

The midwife made the appointment for me so I didn't speak to the hospital receptionist or receive a letter as it was only made last week. The midwife could have told me plain and simple. She told me what they do during the test, just failed to mention I needed to fast. I thought she had given me the information I needed so didn't look it up. Definitely won't rely on any word she's told me now.

As I said I'm not upset about the fact she had make a referral, as I know it's procedure if she has concerns. And yes when she asked me how much I have drank in the past I was honest - I've always been honest with healthcare professionals. I was only miffed because it was a surprise, I would have appreciated her just filling me in - I have asked her to be open and honest with me as I am with her but she just hasn't been.

I understand that health services are stretched and this is why in was an itty small thing and mentioned it as it goes along side other things I'm less than pleased about.

All in all, I think she's just a bit rubbish and the wasted trip to the hospital annoyed me this morning, until then I was just going to leave it as I was only miffed about being surprised by the SS. Just want to make sure making a complaint is not a bit over the top.

And yes, she did make out the appointment was urgent so I was expecting a response a bit sooner than that. Again, this was only a small matter that just adds to the list of things I don't like about the way she works!
