to think we can come up with good ideas to save M&S

M&S definitely on the skids. Profits down, stores closing, Chief Exec saying radical transformation required. Fairly clear that this has happened because they're not listening to their core market, which I'd wager has a fairly large crossover with the MN demographic. So Steve Rowe, if you're listening, here are a few bullet points.

  1. Scrap the Sparks card.
  2. Sack your womenswear design team. All of them. Now.
  3. Ditch the Per Una brand.
  4. Rethink your over generous returns policy.

I've been thinking the same for ages. Good thread, op.
Simple classic style pencil skirts and fitted jackets in a variety of colours so we can mix and match. Simple trews and sweaters in same variety of colours. Keep the foodhall, scrap per Ina. Sack the current staff who decide what clothes you provide.

DelphiniumBlue · 24/05/2018 19:49

I think it is possible to appeal to a very broad age range if you sell decent quality basics - I don't know anyone who wouldn't buy, for example, a long sleeved thin cotton longish scoop neck t-shirt for layering. Oh, wait, you used to do that, but not any more.

Or fine cotton or wool plain cardigans and jumpers, without frills and stupid embellishments. I can get polyester in Primark. And I'd like them in a range of nice colours please. I do not ever want to wear salmon, I have never seen anyone look good in it.

Or cotton knickers in colours to match the bras you sell.
Well done for the shoes though, Insolia and Footglove are really comfortable, and the low block-heeled sandals are fab!

cloudspotter · 24/05/2018 20:05

How have M&S got it so badly wrong when others are doing great business in their market.

Take clothes, there's Boden, Fat Face, White Stuff, all selling upmarket ranges of clothes that would have been M&S core market, surely.

And you're right, simple basics like school uniform that would be great to have a good quality version.

Not only Primark but Tesco, Sainsbury's and George at Asda all offer cheap clothes in a huge range of sizes. They have to have a design edge to charge more.

woodywoo2 · 24/05/2018 20:18

Longer length clothes! Everything is so short!

Delamereroad · 24/05/2018 20:19

Right this is what I want....
Proper loyalty card
Next day delivery
T shirts with scoop necks and some lycra to retain shape
Unpadded bras- those of us with boobs don't need padding in a T shirt bra FFS
Slouchy leather bags
Get your opaques back to the quality they once were or cut the price- Tesco do better tights
Secret support vests
Ditch the nightwear it is all hideous I buy great PJs in Primark- wash like a dream.
Cashmere jumpers and cardi's in jewel colours for winter
Long sleeve baselayers again with lycra
Dresses- good shapes plain colours no fecking embellishments
Evening wear doesn't need glitter!!
Set the shops up like John Lewis with each range in it's own concession
Help us by advertising the ranges separately and target age groups/themes appropriately
On the positive side I love your over priced food but only go in for special stuff now as prices have got daft- Aldi and Tesco often beat you in taste tests
Flowers rubbish last couple of times I have purchased didn't last well
The 50-70 woman a lot of whom have a bit of disposable income and look younger than ever - capture that market
Next school kit lasted and washed better than M&S this year -so will stick to them for school clothes after being a fan of M&S school kit
You have a reputation for quality - bring it back.
Ps the catalogue thing you did approx. 20 years ago was great - I bought a lot of stuff -perhaps you missed your opportunity?

YearOfYouRemember · 24/05/2018 20:19

I wish they'd display bras by size rather than colour and style and it makes me roll my eyes big time when they trumpet their up to DD+ line. That size is normal these days and not a big deal. They currently have about six bras in my size. Two styles. Cheers. Once I was told "we can't stock every size madam" when I said they didn't have any bras in my (old) size AngrySad.

goingtotown · 24/05/2018 20:21

Received my friends & family 20% vouchers today. I’d love to use them but there’s no clothes in the store that I want. Left them out at work for colleagues to use but they’ve not been taken.

Mexicantortilla · 24/05/2018 20:23

Please make tops a bit longer. I’m 5’9” and all your tops finish just below my waist which is ridiculously short so I have to go elsewhere. Think about good quality capsule pieces in natural fabrics, with lots of colours to choose from. Think more like Boden

clarkl2 · 24/05/2018 20:24

Bought some lovely beach wear this week but their granny cardies and crap jeans need to go

HermioneWeasley · 24/05/2018 20:30

Change your “anyone can use the changing rooms they identify with” bullshit

Copy uniqlo

Take your opaque tights back to a few years ago, agree the quality’s gone really downhill

Food is insanely expensive and no better (and sometimes not as good) as supermarket premium ranges. Also, their range hasn’t changed for years, same biscuits at Xmas etc,

LightAsTheBreeze · 24/05/2018 20:30

I bought some nice picnic plates and bowls for our touring caravan with my 20% off vouchers, they are really nice.

Shame I couldn’t find some nice clothes also...

Pliudev · 24/05/2018 20:31

I've been thinking for years that M&S should be competing with Boden and White Stuff. I can't understand why their designers get it so right and M&S so wrong. Last time I called, there were racks and racks of reduced floral tops in man made fibres and huge sizes. I can't think of anyone who would wear them. Also, why don't they try harder to accommodate their particular customers? I go to the store in SW Cornwall and masses of floor space is given over to almost identical black work trousers. Note to M&S: there aren't that many officeworkers in this area.

Marcipex · 24/05/2018 20:38

Strappy cotton nighties. Not viscose, rayon, whatever. I will never buy them. I have one ancient cotton M&S one that I cherish and can't replace.

Cotton sun dresses.

Cotton cardis, longer, plain, marled, dip dyes, but no giant flowers with sequins in the centre sewn onto one side. Put that effort into adding pockets instead.

Sack all your designers.

youdialwetile · 24/05/2018 20:40

I wish they would play up their "britishness" on the kids clothes. Went in there for young boys clothes last summer, but it was all USA-themed sportswear. I live in the US and thought I could rely on m&s for some UK culture. Disappointing.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 24/05/2018 20:41

Well cut, beautiful basics. Would happily pay more for a well cut shift dress, fitted jacket, good jeans, a tight good quality t shirt, a white shirt. Things that make a woman look and feel good. This could include angora/cashmere cardigans, jumpers. But please make them suitable for women other than grandmothers and we might actually buy them. The older you get, the less likely you are to get away with cheap clothes. It's about the cut and the quality of the fabric. Doesn't have to be bang on trend. Like what M&S used to do, like.

Decent bloody nightwear. Not crappy PJs with teddies, lovehearts, stupid logos or other crap on then. Plain, comfortable cotton, up to being put in the wash every morning and not falling apart in 3 months.

Decent underwear. Again, less on the sexy and more on the looking good on the female form. Most of us don't give a shit about looking sexy but we like to look stylish and slim, even when we aren't necesarily.

Look at the classics that Kate M and now Meghan M wear. Classic cuts, good quality.

The 'Look expensive' threads on the Style and Beauty board should be what M&S aspire to. To be the 'Go-To' place for a woman to go to 'look expensive' with yes, often plain, classic basics that can be dressed up according to the woman's taste and to the occasion, without feeling that they are wearing the same bloody outfit as the next woman. A well cut dress is a thing of beauty, and can be changed with deifferent shoes, scarves etc. M&S doesn't have to provide all the different shoes or scarves, in fact it's better if they don't, but if they provide beautiful basics, women will buy them.

I really hope they do

WhatwouldJoydo · 24/05/2018 20:44

Make all stores as stocked as the London ones. Kensington high street aimed at 30+ woman working, Oxford city branch aimed at 70+!
Girlswear has gone to ruin. Changed the range from baby to 6. And 3 to 13. I went in for leggings for a 6 year old and only had some with slogans. (I went to H&M next door instead after telling the management how they’d got it so wrong). Nothing plain, classic, and simple for anyone!
If it sells out. Means it’s good. Don’t cancel it.
Jump on the gender free clothes bandwagon (like JL). Sea salt have started doing gender free clothes for adults with basics. Linen shorts. T shirts. Very interesting! I want this for kids. I was a white t shirt. No ruffles, bows, glitter or slogans.
Oh god. I could go on for ever as it’s so obvious to everyone but M&S!!

Foxylass · 24/05/2018 20:45

Food quality has dropped recently. Clothing / womenswear has been outdated for ages.
Come on M&S get your arse into gear and get back on track.

Clarich007 · 24/05/2018 20:59

I agree about the Sparks card, It's the worst loyalty card i have ever come across.I still use it each time i shop there but honestly don't know why.

eloisesparkle · 24/05/2018 21:00

Why bother advising M&S ?
As long as I've been on Mumsnet there has been a thread 'advising' M&S.
They never reply - good PR for them if they did - hey Mumsnetters we're reading your (free- as opposed to a hugely costly market research project ) suggestions and taking them on board.

No they carry on blithely doing what they do and profits fall. Sad

They don't care

W0rriedMum · 24/05/2018 21:11

There must be something wrong with me.. I went in for the first time in years on Saturday and bought a ton of stuff! A long skirt in a range of colours and a Breton tee which was so well made.. Maybe I got lucky for once.

W0rriedMum · 24/05/2018 21:13

I am normally a Reiss/Boden/Anthropology shopper if that explains this weekend's events.

woollyheart · 24/05/2018 21:51

Maybe M&S think we are nostalgic for the 60s and synthetic fabrics such as nylon and crimplene! If so, they are very very wrong....

Gbtch · 24/05/2018 22:38

When I was 20 I went to M&S on recommendation of a 25yr old friend. I bought simple classic fine knot jumpers that had fab quality. I shopped there for years after, always finding many things I loved to chose from. I am almost 60 now and for the last 12 years or so have struggled to find anything I like. Over the last few years nothing! I still go hoping that someday they will return to their old form. Though older I still want classic quality styles but can't find them. So disappointing each time I visit( fewer now and dwindling) I would love the store to return to its old form. I now have more funds to buy all of the choices I was faced with when younger but I go home with poached salmon and biscuits!

RoseAgentEight · 24/05/2018 23:02

I was in M&S today returning a top that didn't suit me that I'd bought online. I queued and the shop assistant faffed about for ages talking to her colleague about a previous customer, wouldn't pay any attention to me, was quite rude when asking me to find an order number on my phone when she had it on the screen. Then I had to go over to the other desk to stand in another queue to get the refund. That assistant told me she'd been working there for 43 years and I felt like I'd been queuing for 43 years.

TheBitterBoy · 24/05/2018 23:08

I think M&S have failed to recognise that even their older customers are no longer 'old'. People turning 70 this year were 16 in 1964 - someone who was a teenager in the sixties is not going to have graduated into a shampoo and set, pleated skirt wearing nana (well my mum certainly didn't!). There is a reason old style small local hairdressers are struggling with the loss of the weekly shampoo and set market.
At the younger end of their demographic - I'm 45, and they should be wooing me for the future, but again, they have failed to notice that we're from the teenage 90's rave generation, not the slacks wearing housewives of the 70's
