to think we can come up with good ideas to save M&S

M&S definitely on the skids. Profits down, stores closing, Chief Exec saying radical transformation required. Fairly clear that this has happened because they're not listening to their core market, which I'd wager has a fairly large crossover with the MN demographic. So Steve Rowe, if you're listening, here are a few bullet points.

  1. Scrap the Sparks card.
  2. Sack your womenswear design team. All of them. Now.
  3. Ditch the Per Una brand.
  4. Rethink your over generous returns policy.

This looks like it is designed for a three year old Hmm

SuburbanCrofter · 23/05/2018 16:15

should have a Percy Pig leather emblem attached. So all of us that buy the Percy Pigs for themselves & not the kids can have a smile to themselves. I actually think it's be quite a marketing symbol.

Now THAT'S the kind of quality idea I come to Mumsnet for Grin

SteviebunsBottritrundle · 23/05/2018 16:15

I agree with loads on here.

Especially;

  1. sell really good quality basics - no fast fashion crap
  2. do similar to Uniqlo - the same item in a few different colours
  3. completely change how you fit bras. The last time I went there for a bra fitting it was appallingly bad
misscockerspaniel · 23/05/2018 16:15

anotherjob or, possibly, designed by a three year old

AlexaAmbidextra · 23/05/2018 16:17

For all those saying the clothes are awful for anyone under 60, let me categorically state that the clothes are awful for over 60s too. Trust me, you don’t morph into a beige polyester wearer on your 60th birthday. Shock

orangetreesinspring · 23/05/2018 16:17

Agree with much of the above.

  • stick to good quality clothes that will last and charge more. I have totally stopped buying m&s for socks/pants because the quality has dropped so much but the price hasn't. Primark is better value but I would rather pay more for stuff that lasts.

Customers do really notice when the quality drops and IMO would be happier with a price rise than a quality drop.

Def do smaller sizes in womenswear.

BestZebbie · 23/05/2018 16:18

Sell food for vegetarians! And vegans too, now that it is 2018 and everything.... It all starts so well with Percy pigs and then there are no ready meals anymore.

LakieLady · 23/05/2018 16:18

I'm breastfeeding at the moment and am trying to find some knee length, low v-neck or wrap dresses with short sleeves for wearing over the summer. M&S (and, to be fair, most other retailers) are mostly selling high necked clothes it'd be impossible to easily get my boobs in and out of.

Try Sea Salt. I tried on a couple of lovely wrapover dresses in there a week or two ago. They were so low in the front I swear my tits would have leapt straight out every time I sneezed.

Which is very often, given it's hay fever season.

anotherjob · 23/05/2018 16:20

I think a three year old would do a better job tbh Sad

Why the hell do they add frills and shite to everything as well? And their tops are so short. I’m only 5’4” but they don’t even begin to cover my bum.

SteviebunsBottritrundle · 23/05/2018 16:21

YY! I’ve been moaning about their too-short tops for years. Who on earth are they supposed to fit Confused?

Shampooeeee · 23/05/2018 16:23

Echoing the PPs who hate man- made fabrics.
There is a huge gap in the market for organic clothes for adults on the high street. M&S made a big mistake when they gave up on their reputation for quality and joined the race to the bottom.

BluePheasant · 23/05/2018 16:24

Stop changing the homeware designs so frequently. If you buy any tableware or bedding you can never get anything to match again as by the time you want to replace something it’s no longer part of the range. It puts me off buying things like that from M&S.

Yes to good quality basics in non frumpy styles.

anotherjob · 23/05/2018 16:24

look at this monstrosity

Liberation1 · 23/05/2018 16:26

TSS Mavis, Beverly, Linda and Kevin 🤣🤣🤣

anotherjob · 23/05/2018 16:26

Tragic and related to that pink thing last year.

My eyes, my eyes !

Does anyone remember the astronomy dress recently that apparently sold like mad??

I thought it was like something you'd expect from Princess Anne, who doesn't care a fig for fashion but has to wear practical and smart

anotherjob · 23/05/2018 16:29

really short top

Put this on someone with boobs and they’ll be flashing their spare tyre and stretch marks no problem Hmm some of us like to cover up.

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 23/05/2018 16:30

That second link is like Miss Havishams nightie!

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 23/05/2018 16:31

Hideous top, third link but the striped deckchair underneath is much worse

anotherjob · 23/05/2018 16:32

return of the killer frills

Downtheroadfirstonleft · 23/05/2018 16:33

Do half of this M&S and we'll flock back to you.

I'm still buying M&S knickers and gym gear.

Natural fibres, sensible colours, made in UK or some guarantee it's not from a sweatshop please.

witchhazelblue · 23/05/2018 16:33

Interestingly if you read the comments section on this news on the BBC site, the highest rated comments are all saying the opposite of here - to stop marketing for 'younger people' and to 'go back to traditional M&S'.

I take a lot of BBC comments sections with a giant pinch of salt, but it's interesting that it's such a polar opposite.

anotherjob · 23/05/2018 16:34

do we really want to go out in a hideous 80s nightshirt?

I’m thinking not 🤔

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 23/05/2018 16:35

They do know that "Dobby" is a House Elf right ?

It's not selling itself to me with that comparison

anotherjob · 23/05/2018 16:37

the look on the model’s face says it all really
