To ask what your weekly food shop bill is?

We are currently spending a fair bit more than we would like to on our weekly shopping - and are looking to save some money in the next few months for moving to our new house and this seems like a good place to start

Its me, dp, and our 3 year old and 1 year old.

So if anybody could give some advice on:

What you spend and how many of you it feeds
Where you shop thats cheapest
Meal plans for the family

Any help much appreciated
Thankyou Grin

My weekly shop is around £60-£70 a week for a family of 3. I go to Aldi to do my main shop (mainly things like fruit, vegetables, meats, tinned food, quark, yogurts, etc), but then I go to Morrison's or Sainsbury's to grab anything else I couldn't get from Aldi. I only buy beef mince that's 5% fat and lamb mince 10% fat and my God they are expensive! Both of them alone is almost £10. I've substituted for Quorn Mince now, because it is cheaper and still healthier option but I do miss my proper mince.

It's also expensive because I mainly eat healthy food like fruit, vegetables, super foods, etc. I never buy junk food, so I don't mind paying that amount if it means my family and I benefit from it but if I could try and get it lower, then I would.

Crazy, I remember back in the days when I was obese that my shopping was a LOT cheaper than it is now! Sad

£50 for DP, me & DS (2)

I’ll spend about £15 a month in Home Bargains on cleaning stuff and toiletries

Adversecamber22 · 23/05/2018 09:12

I spend about 100 a week, this includes one takeaway I buy three or four meat dishes and rice from the takeaway but make my own stir fried veg.
Two adults , one teen
Both DH and DS do a lot of sport, they have huge appetites.
Sainsbury's mainly but also M&S and Aldi and Iceland

We eat exceptionally well because I go in to Sainsburys three times a week on the way home from my course. It's as they are reducing stuff, so I buy a lot of stuff half price or even less. Got a joint of beef reduced from 11 to 5 last week. So I never meal plan, ever. So if they have lots of avocados I will make guacamole. I buy frozen fish and veg from Iceland and get the free delivery, on the rare occasion Sainsbury's has nothing I want it's tuna or cod from the freezer. I do it this way as I have lots of spare time and I like the spur of the moment of it all.

£120 (meat from the butchers everything else from tesco) this doesn't include nappies or cleaning products or cat food.
We meal plan and I make everything from fresh. We are a family of 2 adults 4DDs.

littlepeas · 23/05/2018 09:31

I shop every 5 days (Ocado) and usually spend between £120 and £150. That’s 2 adults, 3dc 6, 8 and 9 and a big dog. We’re veggie, but I buy everything I can organic and we don’t drink cows milk (alternatives are quite expensive) - fruit is so expensive and we get through loads! I meal plan and cook everything from scratch - I find it very difficult to spend less and have stopped trying tbh.

About £80 a week for 2 adults and a 10 year old. That doesn't include meat, fish, toilet roll, kitchen roll as we get those from Costco. It includes wine though. I prefer brands and I shop at Sainsburys. I don't think it's a lot.

stressedoutfred · 23/05/2018 11:04

Probably about £140 a week - 2 adults , 2 children ( although 14 year old is 6ft tall and eats more than me) and a small dog

That's a £90 main shop and £50 on top up bits over the week. I spend less if I get to do an Aldi main shop but we don't have a local one

Cath2907 · 23/05/2018 11:14

I had to do this. For a family of 3 (2 adults and a 7 yr old) it was costing me close to £150/week in Tesco. I swapped to Lidl and now spend £60/week. I still have to pop to Tesco once in a while to buy a few things we like that Lidl doesn't stock but it is still a HUGE saving.

Some of it is cheaper products but most of it is less of the tempting stuff I used to buy that we'd not eat or didn't need.

Stephisaur · 23/05/2018 11:22

£50-60/week for me and DH. It's more at the moment as I'm pregnant, so I don't know what I want to eat. This means lots of little trips to the supermarket, which is a waste of time and money!

We meal plan for the week and then shop from our list. Our bill is less on weeks where DH buys stuff to make lunches, rather than ready meals. Our shopping is for food, household items, pop for DH and anything else we see while we're there.

We shop at Asda because it's on our doorstep.

Somtamthai · 23/05/2018 11:27

3-5000 Thai baht a week. So up to £100.
Varies dep being on how much British imports I buy.

2 adults and 1 child
Eat out regularly cause I get bored of rice (3 times a day :o). So spend way to much on food :o.

sayhellotothelittlefella · 23/05/2018 11:38

At least £350 per week - mostly at Aldi, occasionally a shop from Ocado’s offers. Feeds a family of 8 - several teenage boys!

adaline · 23/05/2018 11:42

Two adults here. We spend about £50 a week on average, including toiletries/cleaning products. We shop in Tesco as it's the only supermarket within a 20 minute drive of here.

We could buy cheaper in Aldi/Lidl but our closest is a 45 minute drive each direction so it's not worth it in terms of time and petrol costs.

Snowysky20009 · 23/05/2018 11:51

£180 every 10 days or so at either Tesco, Asda or Ocado, and all delivered. 2 adults and 2 teen boys- and boy do they eat! Then there is top ups throughout such as bread, bread rolls, milk, fruit, ham and veg. We do spend about £14 each time on bottled water- our tap water is horrible. I haven't bought squash or fuzzy drinks now in about 16 months and we are all better for it. But we have 2 freezers which are full, along with our cupboards. Realistically we could probably eat for 3 months without buying much. Our spends tend to be fruit, veg, dairy, meat and prepared meat I.e chicken on croute, beef wellingtons, chicken in bacon, gammon with honey glaze etc. I found that when I was buying it all seperate that most of the time it was costing more than prepared.

Canshopwillshop · 25/05/2018 20:12

Milkycoffee - you don’t need to spend extra for lower fat mince, just drain all the fat off when you have browned it.

Namelesswonder · 25/05/2018 20:36

Between £100-120 a week, 2 adults, 10 and 13 yr olds. Cook from scratch at least 5 nights a week. Shop at Tesco and Sainsbury’s. 10 yr old has allergies and her non-dairy milk alone costs £10 a week, plus gluten free bread, rolls, cereal, pasta probably another £10 a week.

EthelBeavers · 25/05/2018 20:50

Yes to cat litter being bonkersly expensive. If you're near one Pets At Home do a 15 litre bag for £4 and a 30 litre is £6. Think they deliver as well. I've started stockpiling when they get it in, they must think I've got a really large tiger at home.
