To ask me to help pick a job!

I have a job in the NHS that I have a love/hate relationship with and recently saw a job at my DD's (private) School. I had the interview yesterday and was offered it this morning. It's 2 days a week (I now work 3), they have pretty much offered to match my salary (on a pro rata basis) and 30% off fees - which will go a long way as DD is only in reception and we will be sending DS after next year too.

Thing is I do like my job (at the moment) and my team in the NHS, it's something I'm good at it's just that there's lot of changes ahead (we're merging with another team so there will possibly be job losses and very new ways of working). Also it brings in more money obviously with being 3 days. However I'd save £200 a month in Nursery fees taking the school job as I'd only put DS in 1 day a week as opposed to 2 (family take care of him on the other day). The NHS T&Cs of my contract also seem better - especially sick pay!

Which one would you have? I said I'd get back to them by tomorrow morning at the latest

I'd take the job at the school if you can afford to do so if you think you'd be happy there. Money off the fees counter balances the loss from going down to two days a week and you'd have an additional day to do with as you will

Sorry title should have read *AIBU to ask you to help me pick a job 🙄🙄

take the school job
you'll only have to work term time
fee remission is the ninth wonder of the world

Monoblock67 · 22/05/2018 12:29

Definitely take the school job! It’s better for you and the DCs. The NHS will always be there should you want to return.

DanielCraigsUnderpants · 22/05/2018 12:32

"The NHS will always be there should you want to return."

Jury's out on that one,

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 22/05/2018 13:11

Thanks everyone! Yes I think fee remissions are a rare thing! I guess I feel guilty about leaving my current job and everyone in the lurch

Don't forget to think about your NHS pension though. Yes, in the short/medium term the school job sounds great but if it was me, I'd be very reluctant to give up my pension.

Trinity66 · 22/05/2018 13:22

Another vote for the school job

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 22/05/2018 20:46

Good point about the pension. I've done calculations and if we have both kids in the school all the way to sixth form then we save £90,000 😱

Which option are you financially better off with?
Would you save more money in school fees than you would make working the extra day?

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 22/05/2018 21:29

We wouldn't at first garden but in 2 years when DS starts reception and DD is in the juniors the bills will shoot up so we will be saving loads!

Would you enjoy the job with the school?

How does it affect your longer term work aspirations?

How does the pension compare? If you're in a defined benefit scheme and going to a defined contribution scheme that's a significant difference.

Not saying don't take the job in the school, but just some things to consider!

gardeningnewbie · 22/05/2018 21:51

Then I would perhaps consider it but would need to weigh up a few things:

  • can you afford the loss of income for those two years?
  • if you accepted the job and they suddenly pulled the discount in school fees, how easy would it be for you to get another job that pays a similar wage. Bearing in mind other employers would look at the fact you were only working 2 days a week.
  • pension as someone else said before
  • I'm sure you've already considered this point before but I'll put it down anyway.... are there other equally as good non fee paying schools around. You could then stay in your 3 day a week job and have a lot more cash to spend on dc. Just a thought. But I understand your reasoning if the other schools around are no good!
CherryChasingDotMuncher · 23/05/2018 15:23

garden although I'd have a drop in income the reduction in school fees balances it out so we would be out of pocket.

We're happy with the school and will keep DD there, it's still affordable on our combined wage, but if they pulled the discount then yes that would be a problem (although I don't see why they would as I know this keeps people in jobs)

I have to let them know by tomorrow morning ideally 😬

Take the school job.

Presumably you applied for a reason, not just for giggles so I don't see why your hesitant now.

The NHS always has mass recruitment, you'd get back in if you decide to go back at a later date.

The school fee savings are very generous, and I guess it'd mean you only work term time only?
