I'm 24, just had my first smear last week which of course I didn't want to do but got on with it and thought that was done and dusted. I've just taken a call from the hospital saying I need to make an appointment. I am absolutely sh*tting myself sat at my desk at work trying not to burst into tears. They offered me the 19th June, if it was really bad wouldn't they want me to go in ASAP? DP is in a client meeting so I don't have anyone to talk to, I don't know what I'm expecting to get back by posting this but I just don't know what to do, i'm petrified. AIBU, should I just grow a pair?

Please don’t worry, they may have found some changes but that doesn’t mean it’s anything to panic about. I had an irregular smear earlier this year (I’m 30) and had to have a hospital appointment. There’s some small cell changes due to HPV which isn’t unusual at all, and the fact they’ve seen it means they can watch it and whip anything out before it turns bad.
It might be nothing at all and they just want to double check, or it might be something very early but that means they can keep an eye on it, so it’s great you went for the smear. You’ll be just fine.

I've never been called back but I believe sometimes they just can't always get a proper sample the first time and they have to repeat the test. Annoying, but probably nothing to worry about.

I had an irregular result years ago and had to go to hospital for another test. It turned out fine, although it did mean I was tested annually for a number of years afterwards. I have to say, I was very pleased about that because any issues would've been picked up early. Please, please try not to worry xx

Firstly don't panic. I have had abnormal smears and cervical cancer.

If you had been a higher than CIN3 on your results then they normally would get you in quickly. I have had CIN3 and CIN2 abnormal smears over the years. When they discovered the carcinoma in situ I was called in to the hospital within 5 days. With CIN it was in about 6 weeks or so.

They will probably want to do a colposcopy to have a really good look. With some grades they will do yearly smears and a wait and see approach. With CIN3 normally they would do some form if treatment to remove the abnormal cells.

Just to also tell you abnormal cells are not cancer. They are abnormal cells that MAY turn cancerous if left over the years.

I'm thinking of you and hoping it will all be ok.

Can you call your gp surgery and ask for the results of your smear test. They maybe able to give you more information. Try not to worry, I was recalled once as they didn't take a good enough sample first time round and just wanted to repeat it.

Oh you poor thing. Firstly deep breaths, I'm positive if there was anything of real concern they'd see you sooner.

Can you ring them back and ask why you need to be seen again? Or speak to your GP.

Over 90 percent of changes found in a smear test are pre-Cancer: that means it isn’t Cancer yet and can be cured 100 percent. Don’t worry.
