AIBU to think DH was scammed

We were selling our old car yesterday through autotrader. I took out kid and dog to reduce distractions. DH was dealing. He rang to tell me car was sold for £450 less than advertised but to some lovely people.

I got home later to find they'd had trouble transferring money to our account. He'd seen them set up the transfer on their side but that the payment was delayed until today. Basically he let them drive away without paying.

No money has arrived today. Have emailed them to express concern there's been a mix up and ask them to confirm the details of the transferred money and no answer.

DH said he saw their drivers license, checked it had the same address they'd asked the car to be registered to and overall they seemed a lovely couple. He is sure the money will show up and this is all a mix up. I think they have scammed him and am quite upset and frustrated that he let someone drive away with a few grands worth of our car without actually handing over a penny.

Please tell me I am a suspicious whatsit and this is bound to be a mix up?

Oh that's good OP. Yes, I'm sure DH won't do that again!

spookytime · 22/05/2018 06:38

Hurrah!

MLMsuperfan · 22/05/2018 06:51

Called it!

Glowbug59 · 22/05/2018 07:03

Thank goodness!

extinctspecies · 22/05/2018 07:13

Glad it's all OK.

DH was scammed out of £20k selling a Merc a few years ago. Thieves very well organised & plausible. Police said by the time we'd realised the car would probably have left the country.

Yogagirl123 · 22/05/2018 07:14

So pleased OP, it must have caused you so much stress, I don’t think your DH will make a mistake like that again.

spookytime · 22/05/2018 07:14

ONG extinct Did you ever get the money back?

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 22/05/2018 07:25

What a relief for you OP.

All’s well that end’s well but maybe hang around next time DH is selling a car 🤭

extinctspecies · 22/05/2018 07:36

spookytime Insurance eventually paid out, although only because we had a friend who was an insurance lawyer who was able to advise us.

We were so lucky.

spookytime · 22/05/2018 07:38

extinct Glad it worked out for you, what a stressful time that must have been.

anothernextsale · 22/05/2018 07:41

Good news Cath, phew!

BitOutOfPractice · 22/05/2018 07:43

Phew! I've read this with bated breath!

LakieLady · 22/05/2018 07:45

Phew!

You must be relieved.

Nanna50 · 22/05/2018 07:46

Great news, two lessons learnt one, never part with goods until you have the cash and two, that you have nerves of steel.

Mossend · 22/05/2018 07:57

Thank goodness OP, I'm so glad for you and your husband

SoFake · 22/05/2018 08:04

Phew!

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 22/05/2018 08:17

So pleased it arrived!

LagunaBubbles · 22/05/2018 08:19

What a relief!

odig · 22/05/2018 08:25

I'm nearly as relieved as you OP. Smile

FindoGask · 22/05/2018 08:26

How will the OP's husband have learned his lesson? He thought the couple were kosher, and it turns out they were kosher. Other than the anxiety of the wait for the transfer (which was well stoked by posters on here), it turned out exactly as he thought it would.

Nannyplumssillyoldelf · 22/05/2018 08:51

Phew I'm so pleased to hear that it wasn't a scam.

Failingat40 · 22/05/2018 09:26

@PattiStanger and all the silly vipers. Slow clap Grin

I'm glad it was just a hysterical reaction over a genuine transaction.

I do hope you're giving your poor husband grovelling apology.

RubberJohnny · 22/05/2018 10:59

Why @Failingat40?
He is still a twat of monumental twat proportions. Yes, it's worked out ok but who the fuck lets an unpaid for, expensive item go without getting the money upfront? Who?

FizzyGreenWater · 22/05/2018 11:03

I do hope you're giving your poor husband grovelling apology.

You are fucking JOKING.

What he got was a bloody good warning never to do something so bloody stupid again and I hope he's learned his lesson.

Hysterical reaction? No. Because a scame is absolutely exactly what it could have been and he was LUCKY it wasn't.

Overreaction = people imagining something that was very unlikely to be the case.

There's a lesson here and it certainly isn't 'Trust your DH when he lets strangers drive off in your car with no proof of payment, because hey, that kind of thing is nearly always just fine.'

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 22/05/2018 11:16

Glad the money came through - lucky break! could have been very different.
Agree that the DH doesn't deserve any kind of apology, this could have gone very badly wrong.
