...rather than a really, really large wasp? Shock

About an inch and a half long, half inch wide, brownish yellow in colour and emitting a low buzzing noise.

Please god tell me it was a UFO, or I'm bricking up the windows and ordering myself a flamethrower...

Did it have a very long, pointed proboscis? It could have been a bee fly. They look peculiar but are quite harmless.

Teacuphiccup · 20/05/2018 23:00

Could also be a tree wasp, completely harmless.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 20/05/2018 23:02

Could have been a queen wasp. Now is about the time they are out of hibernation and are on the lookout for nest sites.

squashyhat · 20/05/2018 23:04

Sounds like a hornet. Apparently they are more docile than wasps. I have never remained in close proximity to one long enough to test this Grin

Ohyesiam · 20/05/2018 23:05

It’s s bit eArly in the season for wasps

counterpoint · 20/05/2018 23:07

Had what looked like a cicada buzzing around the hallway yesterday. Why? They are far too big and noisy to be acceptable here.

MereDintofPandiculation · 20/05/2018 23:09

It’s s bit eArly in the season for wasps We've had them around for the last 3-4 weeks

Lunenburg · 20/05/2018 23:10

Could it have been a Cockchafer.

This is the time of year when they come out and I had one in the bedroom last week.

They sound really scary but are quite harmless.

Good grief Constantinople I wasn't going to get that close, bloody thing was huge!! I'll try googling bee fly and tree wasp, will feel horribly guilty if it was as I freaked and batted it out the window Blush

It actually elicited the response 'oh dear sweet mother of all that is holy, what in the hell is that?!' DH in next room couldn't stop laughing, said he thought I was exorcising a demon...Hmm

given the choice I might take the demon

If it was an Asian Hornet there’s a government app for reporting sightings.

Did it look like this?: www.nonnativespecies.orgdownloadDocument.cfm?id=872

www.gov.uk/government/news/new-app-to-report-asian-hornet-sightings

BuffysFavouriteStake · 20/05/2018 23:19

@Lunenburg, sadly it was definitely more yellow and stripier than that Sad

That actually looks cute, I'd never heard of them before Blush Normally winged things don't bother me, although I've recently become allergic to wasps, but this was like a giant furry wasp on steroids!!

MorningsEleven · 20/05/2018 23:24

Hornets are huge, like flying cats (alright, slight exaggeration) and their stinger bums are the size of javelins (bit smaller but y'know). Dont know if they're friendly, the last time I saw one I was busy throwing my children at it to save myself.

BuffysFavouriteStake · 20/05/2018 23:33

OK, definitely not a (rather sweet looking) bee fly. Don't think it's a tree wasp, seemed bigger.

Asian hornet looks the closest so far... Any ideas for anything else it could be around the same size and colouring??

And any tips to keep whatever it was from coming back? short of napalming my neighbourhood

OP posts:
BuffysFavouriteStake · 20/05/2018 23:37

@MorningsEleven GrinGrinGrin

That's an idea... no DC, but I could tie DH to a tree as a sacrificial victim

Possibly a bot fly OP?

Google bot fly

PunxsutawneyHogwash · 20/05/2018 23:48

@MorningsEleven Grin that conjured up a very funny image Grin

BlackeyedSusan · 20/05/2018 23:49

what you needed was the monster of a spider that was in my flat today...

unfortunately that was hoovered...

anyone want to buy a dyson, going cheap, or should I just set it on fire now?

Deshasafraisy · 20/05/2018 23:53

Google wood wasp

JaneJeffer · 21/05/2018 00:04

Sounds like a bumblebee?

BuffysFavouriteStake · 21/05/2018 00:06

Burn it @BlackeyedSusan, you know its the only way. I'll lend you my newly purchased flamethrower Wink

Wow @PunxsutawneyHogwash, don't think it was a bot fly, but some of those images will haunt my dreams Envy (not envy)

Thanks everyone for your suggestions Confused I really should be sleeping, but if anyone needs me I'm digging a bunker...

I bet it was a cockchafer! They are absolutely terrifying! (Harmless though).

Hmmalittlefishy · 21/05/2018 00:11

A drone?
Some poor kid is crying over the loss of their birthday present!

BuffysFavouriteStake · 22/05/2018 14:47

snort never thought of a drone. They'd have had some interesting footage of me dancing about half naked trying to brain the bloody thing with a book ConfusedBlush

Not seen it since, phew Grin

BlackeyedSusan · 24/05/2018 22:16

@BuffysFavouriteStake

Just checking you have not been abducted by aliens in that tiny ufo.

nor had the creature seek revenge in the night for the book attack...

ps, that spider had a mate... it is a very, very wide spider, but now only one atom thick... I would like to apologise to posters in the wmids area who may be suffering ringing in their ears, or temporary deafness..

Maelstrop · 24/05/2018 22:36

Have seen 2 hornets recently. I know this means there’s a nest nearby. I am not happy.
