AIBU a CF re:bed

I am aware that I'm slightly overthinking this, there are obviously bigger things to worry about etc etc but Mumsnetting recently has instilled a fear of being an unaware CF!

I am moving into a house share. The house I'm moving in to has a bed already in the room. The best way I can describe this bed is 'retro'- divan style, old mattress, velour headboard. I've previously asked if I could bring my current bed but the landlord has said they don't have any space to store the old one if I bring mine.

AIBU to ask if I can bring mine, take responsibility for disposing of the old bed and mattress and say that I'll leave my bed behind when I move out, as a replacement for the one I've got rid of? Or am I being a CF for asking/precious for wanting to bring my own bed?

Sounds reasonable to me.

I'm a landlord. It's not cheeky to ask but landlord may say no. If it were me I would let you as long as the bed you were bringing was atleast as good as the bed being replaced and that a contract was signed confirming that you would leave the bed. You'd also have to take responsibility for he fire safety aspect of it. No harm in asking

I dont think YBU, you are offering to dispose of old bed and happy to leave your new one in its place. Don't see why LL would have any problems with that. I wouldn't want to sleep in a bed that sounds like it's had many habitants before hand.

Tbh, if you did that they might not even notice. So long as there is a bed fit for purpose in the room, it should be fine. Alternatively, you could 'break' their bed, and offer to replace it...

I’m a landlord and wouldn’t mind you asking. Might not agree, but it’s ok to ask.

WildForTheNight · 20/05/2018 17:41

Thank you for all the quick responses, glad you don't think I'm being out of order by asking (especially the landlords!) My bed is only about 18 months old, it's not an amazing bed or anything but it does have storage underneath which would help with moving from a house into a house share. The current bed is...older Grin and looks worn.

I'll ask tomorrow when I go up with my next load of stuff. Thanks!

I was in a similar situation as the bed was really terrible- the landlord had bought it from the agent as it was a service they offered but she was really ripped off. Because of the (huge!) money she’d only just paid she said I could either put her bed in storage and return it when I left or just buy a new bed myself.
I stored it for four years, took it back and she immediately saw it, accepted it was terrible and replaced it before the next tennant moved in Hmm
