to not like red school uniforms?

Especially at this time of the year, when the red is all faded.

I like a navy jumper/blue shirt combo. A Catholic school near me has emerald green jumpers and white shirts, which is lovely. Another one has brown- not so much.

Mine was royal blue, ugly as hell but alright I guess. Local school near us has brown and it’s really awful.

My issue is polo shirts in secondary. DH calls me a snob but I really don’t see why NT 11 year olds can’t wear proper shirts. He was in a polo in Year 11 and it looks really sloppy in the photos his mum has up.

DD's primary school was grey with a mustard yellow polo top. It was seriously vile. And you had to buy the polos from the school with the embroidered badge too. The year she left they switched to pale blue polo tops.

We had button up shirts for winter and polo shirts for summer (business dress in sixth form) which was quite practical.

We have royal blue sweatshirts and white polo shirts.

Yes the white polo shirts can be a bugger to get clean but I'd still much rather have colours which I can pick up in the supermarket very cheaply. A local school has lilac polo shirts and purple sweatshirts which are impossible to source cheaply.

I pretty much dislike all the clothing designed as 'school uniform'. It's unflattering even on the Reception babies, usually difficult to get on and off (younger kids get sweatshirts stuck on the heads), ties are just stupid. Button up shirts are dreadful for older girls with big boobs - makes them look like a Japanese 'school girls' porn fantasy - especially if they have a awful check skirt. Blazers - what the ruddy point? Not warm enough in winter but too bulky for a coat on top. I could go on and on.....

What I don't understand is people who only buy uniforms and shoes at the beginning of the school year (England here, only 6 weeks off in the summer). I buy clothes when the old ones get too small, but don't replace everything in the summer months. They wear new clothes at various times of year, when needed.

I would love red! We have navy and grey and it seems so serious and sad on a child. To fix colour, you could add a handful of salt to first wash from new. Then it bleeds less. I have only ever done this with jeans though. Not sure if it works as well with all materials. X

My daughter had red tops in her infant school, loved them. They never faded either. She had cardigans or fleece tops instead of sweatshirts though.

The only uniform I've seen which is vile is the red cardi/yellow polo shirt combo. Only seen on FB though. We're navy and pretty strict about it which I don't mind. Luckily no polo shirts, I detest them!

DD's is maroon I would love nice easy to get hold of red, DS had red, so did I and 5 of my siblings, most of our jumpers lasted long enough to do a couple of children.

One of the primary schools near me has really light grey, almost white jumpers with huge bright coloured printed on lettering, I feel very sorry for the parents trying to keep those clean.

I didn't have a uniform in primary but my secondary one was royal blue. Twenty years later and I still can't wear royal blue.

Having to wear red or maroon at secondary can be unkind to those who have spots.

I love navy. My kids’ primary school is navy trousers/jumper and white shirt and I really like it. I hate grey and brown. My eldest is off to high school and their trousers and jumpers are to be black.

I had navy for primary until we moved, then grey, but uniform was optional so hardly anyone wore it. Bottle green for secondary (convent) school. DDs have maroon for primary, black for secondary.

Polo shirts at DD3's primary - for sport only; shirt/blouse and tie are expected at other times - can be white or gold.

But that's the schools' daft policies. My convent school had a compulsory blazer, but it was for summer use only, and only to be worn outdoors, so no sweltering in classrooms with them. For winter we had laverly gaberdine macs and scarfs in the bottle green and gold school colours.

We have a local school with yellow polo and brown jumper with yellow and brown tartan skirt. It's gross!

Dc's primary is white polo, purple jumper/cardigan and black skirt/trousers.

Which is ok, but every other school in the area have grey so local supermarket don't seem to stock black school trousers.

High school is grey trousers/jumper white shirt and black blazer with gold trim.

For those you have struggled getting white board pen from polo's I have had some success with scrubbing with a dish sponge scruuby side and fairy liquid before washing. Then wash as normal.

We've had red, royal blue and bottle green. The royal blue stayed the brightest, bottle green washed out the most but I liked red the best.

My secondary school uniform was red shirt and black everything else. Thought it was kinda cool

I don't like a red uniform either. Arsenal colours.

DDs is red and navy blue. Red polos and gingham summer dresses, everything else navy but girls can chose to wear either red or navy tights. It’s quite a smart and striking colour combination, I’ve never found a problem with the red dye running and the polos keep their colour really well, and don’t show stains either. My neices wear white polos and go through a new pack every term, my DD is in year 5 and still wearing some I bought for reception.

They all fade, but red is bright and fun. I especially like the girls' summer dresses in red gingham.

Whiteboard markers are my long term nemesis This !! so frustrating.

My secondary school uniform was bottle green too, like pps have mentioned. I wonder if some of us went to the same school?

It was dreadful. We all hated it with a passion. 33 years on now and I have never worn green since. I won't have it in the decor in my house either, it belongs outside with the grass.

I don't think I would have had such a visceral reaction to red, or blue. Polo shirts would have been nice and comfortable.

My DD's uniform is maroon. She is 15, and isn't keen on it though she does acknowledge that it is an improvement on mine.

I quite like red uniforms but can’t stand blazers. For them not to look cheap and polyester, they have to be too expensive for most schools to put on the uniform list.

I’m also not very keen on uniform that is black trousers / skirt and a black sweater - think it reminds me too much of Grange Hill. However, a while ago another poster said that a basic black / grey / navy uniform meant that the school was confident that it knew what it was doing, a bit of a funky trim on blazers / mad lettering on jumpers meant a new head was putting his / her mark on the school and a crazed combination of colours and patterns meant SERIOUS TROUBLE underfoot.
