Amber teething products - woo, right?

I mean, they HAVE to be woo. And yet people persevere with sticking them onto their babies' arms (and sometimes necks).

A good friend's baby has just started sporting one of these items, and I'm obviously keeping quiet but I'm secretly judging so hard.

I just think how many tubes of Anbesol I could buy for the same money...

Placebos work on children and animals because the adults around them see an effect.

This explains the phenomenon in more detail: www.critical-thinking.org.uk/health/alternative-medicine/it-works-in-animals-and-children.php

DS never really struggled with teething. I do wonder if you're constantly looking for signs that they are teething that you might be more likely to see them? Whereas if he had a grumpy day I just tended to think he was probably having a grumpy day. He did occasionally get a bad tooth or obvious mouth pain but it wasn't very frequent and definitely wasn't constant.

I do think with these things quite often people are just looking for anything which might work and there is no perceived risk from a bracelet or necklace, unlike medicines, so they think why not, it's probably worth a try.

Worth noting that there is some risk in that the necklaces can be a strangulation hazard if they get caught on things and the beads can be a choking hazard if any kind of amber jewellery breaks. I know some are made with easy release catches and are knotted after every bead to reduce these risks, though.

Apparently the drooling thing, I was told recently, it's that at some point they simply start producing more saliva in preparation for eating more solids, but they don't yet have the reflex to swallow it, which is why it just comes out of their mouths.

Total crap imo. But so is judging. Not many mn's like it. You must know this.

It's hard getting things right. Try being less judgy op. Perhaps focus on your own life??

I'm a great lover of Amber as jewellery. Usually wear a couple if pieces daily. Never noticed any effect as a painkiller ever. So imo total woo. And I'm not averse to a bit of woo.

Ugh it's everywhere where I live. I just mentally roll my eyes. Mine both teethed with no pain at all and I didn't even use magic! Someone is making a lot of money...

RosyPrimroseface · 20/05/2018 00:26

But it's ok to judge if people just don't accept the scientific method and the notion of evidence, isn't it?

many of the west's current problems can be traced to this...

Storminateapot · 20/05/2018 00:26

I always think they look like someone has stuck one of those 'sweeties on an elastic band bracelet' things on their baby.

Choke hazard, total woo. Wasn't a thing when mine were babies and none of them suffered much with teething. I, on the other hand, wear amber earrings most days and I still need to take cocodamol for chronic pain,

UpstartCrow · 20/05/2018 00:41

Its peer pressure, same as all the other harmful woo.

glueandstick · 20/05/2018 13:23

I’ve got amber earrings in today and have a thumping headache. Clearly isn’t working. They couldn’t get closer to ‘the source of pain’ if they tried.

Namechanger230 · 20/05/2018 19:25

What does "woo" mean?
Also, ex crystal healer believer here! I used to carry them everywhere. Sleep next to them in bed. Put them in my water overnight for the next day Blush
I still have a few left, but only because they're really pretty Grin
Never did win that million for having fool's gold in the furthest corner of my bedroom...Wink
