Yes the L is heard.

I say it like volts-wagon, no idea why the k becomes a t. People either pronounce it like me or vaults-wagon here no one pronounces the k in it.

German speaker - it's follksvaagen or thereabouts although the v is not quite as soft as an English F but almost. I think you owe him an apology...

I have never heard someone say vokeswagon. Although DH regularly says undermime rather than undermine so does MIL, it makes me giggle because I imagine a mime artist doing a half arsed job...
