Ants - argh!

For the first time in a decade somehow we've got ants indoors, which is a fun game for the kids, whack an ant. They seem to be coming up through the skirting boards. It's just weird we've never had this problem but it really is like an invasion now.

I think the old wives tale is to put clove stalks down. Hoping that works.

Are ants known for migratory tactics, the house is like a show home and super clean.

Just seeing them makes me itch.

Anyone else have this problem or solutions. I remember my Grandmother using ant powder but that seemed to do nothing in her house.

The thing is that scares me, you start off with ants, then they start ducking flying.

I guess it is a first world problem, just seems weird they've cropped up in all the downstairs rooms.

Another thing I keep hearing pans clattering in the pan cupboard, ex H thinks I'm mental as my biggest fear can't possible get in, why would they choose the pan cupboard.

Please don't think I'm crazy but a few weeks back there was a persistent smell of sewage in the house. Had a plumber check all the drains and pipes, literally nothing, obviously before spending that kind of money a few doses of super drain unblocker was used. Touch wood, the smell hasn't been back since after the plumber left.

I say it with jest, but it makes you wonder if it's anything Confused! GrinGrin

YANBU - I fucking hate them. There is something really creepy about a whole chain of them creeping and crawling silently along and getting into everything. We used to have a house in Spain and you couldn't leave so much as a scrap of melon or something out, or you'd come back to antmageddon.

We had them in our new (Victorian) house recently - DP put down some insect repeller things and ant powder and it seems to have done the trick.

We had ants recently and powder along skirting boards in the room they were in seemed to do the trick for now (4days later)..

NewYearNewMe18 · 18/05/2018 20:24

Put a sauce of sugar solution out side where they come in … they wont bother you

Wildlingofthewest · 18/05/2018 20:28

We get the most summers
Pour ant powder along all skirting boards and in all holes - leave for 24 hours. They are attracted to food - this includes juice! As we found out one morning waking up to literally about 10 thousand ants in our bedroom all crawling up the bedside tables and into half drunk glasses of squash...... so gross! Don’t forget to power the bathroom - we get them behind the bath panel.....

Ant stop/Nippon pump spray and to fully get rid of the colony the bait stations with the pellets inside.

mummmy2017 · 18/05/2018 20:30

Equal bicarb and icing sugar..
Mix and spread it everywhere you have an ant..
I promise you tomorrow you won't have ants...
It kid and pet safe as well.
Ants can't tell the two things apart..Ants can't fart... so it kills the nest as well.

trilbydoll · 18/05/2018 20:34

We have traps that they go in, collect poison and take it back to the nest. They work surprisingly fast.

Our bathroom was pretty much moving last weekend, I was ready to burn the house down.

gamerchick · 18/05/2018 20:37

Just go buy some bait stations. Stick them where they’re getting in, 2 to the room you’ve seen them and replace after a couple of weeks until ant season. Job done.

Unless you want to dig the nest up and find the queen.

OneStepSideways · 18/05/2018 20:44

Don't bother with the wives tales about vinegar, talc, cinnamon, citronella oil, cloves etc. I tried them all and the ants didn't care!

Bait in those sealed discs works brilliantly (and not messy like powders).

Also Vacuum and mop the floors daily as they're attracted to crumbs and microscopic splashes of juice/ sugary tea etc.

Luisa27 · 18/05/2018 20:44

For those of you who don’t want to kill every creature who dares to interact with us.....lemon peel and lemon juice works as a very good deterrent to ants. They dislike the scent and will stay away from that area...so putting around entrance points is very effective. Similarly with peppermint oil - they hate it
