She loves the singing and doesn't really understand the rest. I've not seen it but know it's a 12a. Is it alright for a 6 year old?

I tried it with an 8 year old and 5 mins in realised it wasn't suitable!

RB68 · 18/05/2018 19:51

I would say not really - I watched it with a 12 yr old last night (1 & 2) and was just about OK - one is better than two to be fair but two got a bit close to the knuckle in my view

SwayingInTime · 18/05/2018 19:51

Not really, there’s a song battle about songs about sex and the gross out bits are also a bit much, also think she’d be bored by a lot of it, save it to enjoy together!

ChaiWallahs · 18/05/2018 19:53

Ok, that's a no then! Thank you all. Any suggestions for films with singing? She's having lessons at the moment and is obsessed!

high school musical, school of rock.

milkjetmum · 18/05/2018 19:56

Greatest showman is a big favourite here. We also love the new(ish) Annie. The animated film 'sing' also good.

ChaiWallahs · 18/05/2018 19:57

Thanks all!

@milkjetmum she adores Annie. I don't know that I can watch it a zillionth time but will definitely try greatest showman!

Nesssie · 18/05/2018 19:57

Dare I say it, Frozen? Or Moana. High school musical. Greatest showman

ChaiWallahs · 18/05/2018 19:57

@Nesssie she loves the former two!

Lemonade Mouth! Disney film out at the time of HSM and camp rock, didn't get the justice it deserved in my eyes Grin

Looselytranslated · 18/05/2018 20:00

I wish there was a pg version of the film cos my 9 year old would like it. Definitely High school musical & camp rock for the same sort of thing are fine.

candlefloozy · 18/05/2018 20:02

The greatest showman for sure!!! Me and my four year old are watching it right now! She knows and loves all the songs!

DragonsAndCakes · 18/05/2018 20:02

Sing is all about singing and is suitable.

Brokenbiscuit · 18/05/2018 20:03

Sound of music! 🙂

ChaiWallahs · 18/05/2018 22:08

We went with school of rock. She loved it! Thank you!

You can look up any films books etc on Common sense Media. It’s a bit American bible belt, but it gives proper descriptions of plots , and a breakdown of any swearing, violence, sex, good or bad message, role models etc.

crumpet · 18/05/2018 22:17

Have you tried all the classic musicals? Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang etc etc? Calamity Jane was a big favourite too.

Chromatographer · 18/05/2018 22:23

Far too many sex and drug references

SavageBeauty73 · 18/05/2018 22:25

Camp Rock.

starday · 18/05/2018 22:26

I watched it with my 3 & 5 year old ! It all went completely over their head and they enjoyed the singing ! They both love mama Mia because of the music not the story

Midthreademergencynamechange · 18/05/2018 22:29

Erm no! Like all American movies and tv programmes it is utterly obsessed with sex.

starzig · 18/05/2018 22:33

I think it's fine. The bits you think are rude, she simply wouldn't get.

Ragusa · 18/05/2018 22:35

I do tend to think if they are too young to get the references there is probably not much harm. Unless you have a child who loves repeating swears in public, as there are a few of those.

Dd10 loves the Pitch Perfect series, mostly for the singing and the competitions. The adult relationship references are still a bit lost on her. Dd7 has been around while it has been on and is mostly uninterested.

My favourite film at 10 was Grease, which I wpuld say was pretty unsuitable in its own way: talk about broken condoms and abortion, sexual innuendo, upskirting, people making fun of girls who didn't put out ...

My parents were totally slack about this sort of thing and I havent grown up amoral or traumatised. Strangely they were hugely outraged by swearing but it didnt work because I love to swear.

upsideup · 18/05/2018 22:37

YANBU, watch the film yourself and decide if it okay for your child though.
My 11 year old watched the first one when it was pretty new which must have been at least 5 years ago so she would have only been about 5/6, she watched the 2 and 3rd the soon as they came out also.
Now rewatches them all of the time and understands them better but still enjoys them just as much
We take little notice of age ratings and make our own judgements knowing our children, wouldnt let 5 year old ds watch it.
