Walking Down the Aisle

WIBVU (and pedantic) to point out that brides don't walk down the aisle. They walk down the nave. The aisle is a side passage normaly parallel to the nave.

Surely you walk down the aisle of the nave??? So you walk down the aisle through the nave

iklboo · 17/05/2018 17:54

I didn't get married in church so it's a completely moot point.

Yorkshirebetty · 17/05/2018 18:05

The nave is just the main part, the aisle goes through it.

No Bear. The nave and the aisle are similar but different architectural features. The nave is normally down the centre with the aisles to one side or each side in in many churches. (Google it!).

I thought they were taken up the aisle. Or possible nave....

SirGawain · 17/05/2018 18:08

Yorkshire. No it doesn't. See above.

Yorkshirebetty · 17/05/2018 18:15

See above what, love? Wink
You're probably right, I'm just going on my brass rubbing days. I think the North aisle and South aisles at the side were used before seating. On plans I have, it just says "Central aisle" that goes through the nave.

Moussemoose · 17/05/2018 18:17

I thought 'taking someone up the aisle' was something elseBlush

Yorkshirebetty · 17/05/2018 18:17

Naughty Grin

PremierNaps · 17/05/2018 18:18

Sounds like something a DP would say 😂 mind if I take you up the aisle tonight 😂😂 not if you wake me

Yorkshirebetty · 17/05/2018 18:21

There's SirGawain raising a genuinely interesting ecclesiastical point, and there's you lot being very naughty! Wink

SirGawain · 17/05/2018 18:32

My posts were wholly innocent in their intent Betty.

What can you do, SirGawain - you try to raise the level of discussion but some people will always drag it down. Smile

Fifthtimelucky · 17/05/2018 21:51

I agree with Yorkshire. The nave is the main bit. The aisle is the walkway that goes through the nave. Many churches, especially small ones have just one aisle that goes through the middle. Larger ones may well have more.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/05/2018 08:11

Op, are you my dad, he always says that!! You are obviously both quite correct. As soon as I saw the title of the thread I thought. 'Arghh it's the nave'

PaintedHorizons · 18/05/2018 09:53

OP is right.
But the expression to "walk down the aisle" is in common usage for weddings so "I'll allow it" Grin

Blobby10 · 18/05/2018 09:57

being very pedantic, doesn't the bride and her father walk UP the aisle and the bride and groom walk DOWN the aisle? Grin or have I got it completely upside down?!

borlottibeans · 18/05/2018 09:57

I personally walked down the aisle between the chairs in the registry office. No nave to be seen but there was a nice bay window Grin
