It’s a hysterectomy question? I feel silly asking as I’m not well informed, be gentle.
Just had a letter thru for my smear test. But I’m not sure if I have to go as I’ve had a full hysterectomy? I guess I’m asking for clarification?

Why don’t you ask the place where the appointment has come from?

MrsMooks · 17/05/2018 17:35

No you don't need to go. You no longer have a cervix!
I still get the letters too despite telling them they are no longer needed.

ScreamingValenta · 17/05/2018 17:37

If your cervix has been removed, you no longer need a smear. I was advised I might have to remove myself from the mailing list after mine. I had one just before my hysterectomy so I'll wait and see if I get another mailing in a couple of years.

CornishMaid1 · 17/05/2018 17:38

It depends on which type of hysterectomy you had. If you had a full hysterectomy, your uterus and cervix would have been removed so you would not need one.

If you had a subtotal hysterectomy, your uterus is removed but your cervix left, so you do carry on having smears.

If you are not sure best check with the doctors to see which you had.

Glowbug59 · 17/05/2018 17:38

I thought you would still need to go. Definitely check.

halfwitpicker · 17/05/2018 17:38

R U kidding?

CornishMaid1 · 17/05/2018 17:56

Sorry, just realised you said you had a full hysterectomy. In that case you would not have a smear generally.

I would call and let them know. If for some unknown reason they still want you to have one (unlikely) they will let you know but otherwise they can take you off the list so you stop getting the reminders.

ScreamingValenta · 17/05/2018 18:00

If you still have your consent form for the operation, that should confirm what type of hysterectomy you had if you are unsure.

Some harsh responses! I'd much rather ask what might feel a stupid question on an anonymous forum rather than ringing the GPS and asking the receptionist, who also might not know. Hope you've had the answer you need OP.

Grasslands · 17/05/2018 18:16

Best to ask your gp, even google wouldn’t know if you have your cervix or not.
Btw it really isn’t unusual for women to not know if their cervix was or wasn’t removed during their hysterectomy.
