Do you have a veg bowl?

My cousin has made fun of my veg bowl. Apparently I’m the only person she knows who has one!

I keep veg that doesn’t need to be kept cold in there, as my fridge would be too full for other things.

Am I weird?? Do you have one???

Most of our veg lives on racks in the cupboard under the stairs. Potatoes in a sack, onions in another, garlic is plaited after harvesting and hung which we just take a bulb as we use it. Squashes will store for months.

If it won't store well in the cupboard I'd rather freeze it than keep it in the fridge.

tomatos actually keep better outside the fridge.

Distractotron · 17/05/2018 21:43

We do this, although we do keep fruit in there too. It all gets eaten quite quickly so I don't think it makes much difference that we sling it all in the same thing. Sometimes other cheap ends up in there; toys, letter.....we're quite disorganised to be fair 😛

Yep - veg bowl on the worktop with sweet potatoes, onions, garlic, carrots etc. Salad stuff and peppers etc in the fridge. No room for it all in the fridge!

Distractotron · 17/05/2018 21:45

*stuff!

BlondeB83 · 17/05/2018 21:52

I have a bag from Lakeland.

Some veggies do not like light, so potatoes and onions can be kept outside the fridge but keep them cool and darkish.

The problem with most houses nowadays is that there is just no space for a cool pantry. I would love one, even more a decent cellar but without both most of my veggies live in the fridge and I never buy for long term, just what I eat in 4 days or so.

ProzacAndWine · 17/05/2018 21:57

I have a veg bowl. It was sold to me as a fruit bowl, but I assume the bowl doesn't mind the misuse.

topcat2014 · 17/05/2018 21:58

I have a cupboard for veg, that has an air brick, so is cooler.

Don't keep any veg in the fridge (apart from some salad items).

Why would anyone put potatoes in there?

NotUmbongoUnchained · 17/05/2018 22:12

Living for the veg bowl love!

I find I actually use the veg more if it’s there in a bowl next to the cooker.

Yes I am that lazy.

The pull out wire basket in the butcher's block for us - what else are you supposed to put in it but potatoes, onions etc. Totally normal to have veg storage outwith the fridge.

EqualityIllusion · 17/05/2018 22:21

Oh no, I've been doing this all wrong. I need a veg bowl. Why have my toxic fridge-stored potatoes not killed me yet?

redshoeblueshoe · 17/05/2018 22:36

Toad thanks for the photo. I didn't know that was for potatoes, and there was one in my local charity shop today, I hope its still there tomorrow.
I have an Ikea fruit bowl that I use for veg.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 17/05/2018 22:37

I have a big bright pink plastic salad bowl that I use for mine

I keep mine in a three tier rack in a cupboard but I try to keep the onions and potatoes apart since I read that each release gases and moisture that can cause the other to spoil quicker.

I keep the onions on the top shelf and the potatoes on the bottom but I am not convinced even that is far enough apart because my potatoes do seem to sprout quickly.

I love that sort of pregnant basket thing that ToadofSorrow keeps her potatoes in. Where can you get one of those?

Passthecake30 · 17/05/2018 23:19

We used to keep old/baking potatoes under the stairs in our old house... until mice found themShock
We currently have them on a potato hessian bag in a larder cupboard, next to similar for onions. Everything else lives in the fridge (even new potatoes). Fruit except for bananas lives in the fridge.
I have a terrible rodent phobia and couldn't have all the veg that you are suggesting out...

I got mine from a garden centre about 4 or 5 years ago, Lakeland and Amazon seem to have them, Google will probably find you a few more if you search for potato basket, potato hopper or potato store.
